The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collecting, preparing, and processing blood and non-blood specimens for testing. They perform CLIA-waived and point-of-care tests while ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
A high school diploma is required, and a phlebotomy certification must be obtained within one year of hire. Preferred qualifications include previous healthcare experience and CPR/BLS certification.

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) plays a vital role in patient care by collecting, preparing, and processing specimens for laboratory testing. This position performs CLIA-waived and point-of-care testing, supports clinical laboratory operations, and ensures accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities Collect and prepare blood and non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, throat swabs, etc.) Assess specimen quality and identify unacceptable samples (e.g., hemolyzed, lipemic, underfilled) Perform and report CLIA-waived and approved tests Process specimens for testing, storage, shipment, or reference labs Prepare slides, load instruments, and report results as allowed under CLIA regulations Resolve unclear or unusual test orders by coordinating with providers, nursing staff, or reference laboratories Maintain compliance with laboratory, hospital, and safety policies Participate in department meetings, training, and quality assurance activities Keep work areas clean and well-stocked Perform required documentation, logs, and clerical functions Build positive working relationships with providers, patients, and coworkers Complete other duties as assigned Required Skills & Abilities Strong ability to learn and apply hands-on training Excellent verbal and written communication skills Knowledge of medical terminology preferred Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Effective time management and prioritization abilities Professional, patient-centered customer service skills CPR/BLS certification preferred Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required Previous education or experience in a healthcare-related field preferred Phlebotomy certification required or ability to obtain within one year of hire Physical Requirements Prolonged standing, walking, and specimen collection Periods of sitting and computer work Ability to lift and move 30-40 pounds (supplies and patient support) Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Eastern Montana weather is characterized by a semi-arid climate. It's part of the Northern Great Plains, experiencing summer temperatures in the 80's with a week or two in the 100's, and cold / dry winters with the average temperatures in the teens with a week or two of temperatures in the negative double digits.
