Medical Laboratory Assistant - Glendive Medical Center

Location: On-site | 202 Prospect Dr, Glendive, MT 59330 | Laboratory Department

Employment Type: Full-Time, non-exempt, hourly (bi-weekly pay)

Schedule

Either three (3) 12-hour shifts or four (4) 10-hour shifts between 6AM - 6:30PM

Pay

The pay range for this position begins at $17.30 per hour

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) plays a vital role in patient care by collecting, preparing, and processing specimens for laboratory testing. This position performs CLIA-waived and point-of-care testing, supports clinical laboratory operations, and ensures accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Key responsibilities
  • Collect and prepare blood and non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, throat swabs, etc.)
  • Assess specimen quality and identify unacceptable samples (e.g., hemolyzed, lipemic, underfilled)
  • Perform and report CLIA-waived and approved tests
  • Process specimens for testing, storage, shipment, or reference labs
  • Prepare slides, load instruments, and report results as allowed under CLIA regulations
  • Resolve unclear or unusual test orders by coordinating with providers, nursing staff, or reference laboratories
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory, hospital, and safety policies
  • Participate in department meetings, training, and quality assurance activities
  • Keep work areas clean and well-stocked
  • Perform required documentation, logs, and clerical functions
  • Build positive working relationships with providers, patients, and coworkers
  • Complete other duties as assigned

  • Periods of sitting and computer work
  • Ability to lift and move 30-40 pounds (supplies and patient support)
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Glendive Medical Center (GMC) is a full-service, 25-bed acute care hospital with 24-hour emergency care, full medical and surgical services, and an attached 36-bed skilled Extended Care facility.
