About the role

The Radiation Therapist is responsible for safely delivering accurate proton radiation therapy treatments and performing CT simulations according to prescriptions. They also manage patient documentation, provide education to patients and families, and ensure high-quality technical execution of treatment protocols.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and one of the largest free-standing proton clinics in the world.

The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room.

Hampton Proton has been treating a variety of cancers since August 2010.

Upon learning more about the treatment from a Hampton University alumnus, he assembled a team to assess the feasibility of what would become the largest free-standing proton therapy facility in the world.

Radiation Therapist The Radiation Therapist reports directly to the Radiation Therapy Supervisor and indirectly to the Director of Clinical Operations.

The Radiation Therapist safely delivers proton therapy treatments and CT simulations following Hampton Proton policies and procedures with the highest level of quality and compassion for patients and their families.

Responsibilities

Deliver safe, accurate, and efficient proton radiation therapy treatments according to the prescription and any treatment protocol provided by the Radiation Oncologist. Explain treatment procedures to patients and/or family members, and respond effectively to patient inquiries, and refer medical questions to appropriate personnel. Understand patient history and diagnosis to perform chart checks for complete treatment documentation. Accurately input treatment related data into the oncology record and verify system(s). Schedule treatments for patients, provide patient education by discussing treatment procedures, and assure understanding. Perform CT simulations on a rotational shift. Acquire and evaluate digital portal images for technical quality, treatment accuracy, and use/construct immobilization devices as needed. Perform basic dosimetry procedures as directed for collecting and documenting data acquired during the simulation procedure.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited Radiation Therapy program. Current R.T.(T)(ARRT) certification is required. Possess a current Virginia license as a Radiologic Technologist.
