The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive care and education to cancer patients undergoing proton therapy, serving as a link between patients and the interdisciplinary care team. Responsibilities include coordinating appointments, documenting interventions in EMRs, and participating in quality improvement activities to enhance patient satisfaction.
Candidates must hold a current Virginia RN license and have previous healthcare experience in a hospital or busy physician practice, with radiation oncology experience required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and oncology certification are preferred.
· Assists and educate patients in understanding their diagnosis, treatment options, and the resources available, including educating eligible patients about appropriate clinical research studies and technologies. · Serves as an essential link between patients and all other care providers. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary Proton team to coordinate and provide patient care. · Facilitate appointments for consultants and support services within established service standards, including social workers, dietitians, physicians, etc. · Develop patient education programs and tools. · Follow patients throughout the care continuum, including inpatient admissions, collaborate with inpatient care management resources, notify the therapy team and provider of changes in patient’s status · Assist and oversee medical assistants in the delivery of patient care / procedures. · Serves as mentor for nursing students or medical staff from outside facilities. · Initiates, builds, and maintains relationships with patients in the clinic, offering support and guidance as they go through Proton Radiation Therapy Treatments. · Able to handle issues through conflict resolution and professional communication. · Passionate, trustworthy, and empathetic when working with clients. · Works with Cancer Registry staff and others to collect data, track outcomes, and support strategic planning processes. · Responsible for outreach efforts to establish and maintain positive working relationships with key customers (physicians, office staff, diagnostic staff, nurses, radiology staff, social services staff, and radiation oncology staff, etc.). · Takes verbal medication orders and procedures order from provider, documents and assigns tasks accordingly to appropriate team member. · Assists pharmacy with prior authorizations if needed. Facilitates and completes provider orders of frequently prescribed medications (Cialis, Flomax, Steroids, etc.). · Follows established facility policies and procedures/practices. · Anticipates and initiates coordination activities assuring the patient has exceptional experience at HUPCI. · Maintain regular communication with the patient’s providers through clinical messages in MOSAIQ, EPIC, Kaiku, emails, and phone calls. · Refer to external specialty services when other issues are identified (i.e., home care, neurology, pulmonology, etc.) per physician’s orders. · Documents every intervention into the appropriate electronic medical record (MOSAIQ, EPIC, Kaiku etc.) · Works with medical interpreters and interpreter services to provide services to patients of other languages. · Assures culturally and age-appropriate care of all patients. · Provides patients with information about their disease, treatment plan, medications, home care needs, follow-up appointments, and referrals to community resource · Manage assigned cases, complete weekly department productivity templates, and assign documents to EMR for MD to review. · Ensure medical records are complete through periodic quality assurance audit and control. · Assists with tracking clinic supply needs and communicate with appropriate personnel/department. · Assists in obtaining pre-authorizations as needed for insurance verification and/or provide clinical information to assist the Patient Coordinator and Financial Counselor. · Maintains standard operating procedures for clinical services to ensure proper procedures, safety and quality assurance requirements are met. · Provides transparent communication regarding productivity challenges with upper management. · Conduct new patient phone interviews and register new patients for consultation assigned by the Director of Nursing. · Participate in activities to improve quality and patient satisfaction. · Protects and maintains patient’s right to privacy, safety, and confidentiality. Provides coverage in all clinical areas as directed by the Director of Nursing. · Assist with the efficient operation of workflow within the department by performing other duties as assigned.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. General knowledge of electronic health records. · Requires excellent leadership, organizational, written and verbal communication, plus excellent interpersonal skills. · Requires problem solving and decision-making abilities. Always remain composed and professional. · Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills required. · Must be able to work in a self-directed manner, with an ability to work with and lead teams · Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task. Strong time management, organizational and planning skills · Good telephone etiquette. · Answer incoming clinic calls, field and answer questions, schedule appointments, route calls and relay messages as appropriate, working with numerous distractions and interruptions. · Able to navigate and document in various Electronic Medical Records (EMR) platforms.
· The applicant must possess a current VA RN license (oncology certified nurse preferred) and have a previous healthcare experience in a hospital or busy physician practice (oncology experience is strongly preferred). · Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is a plus. The employee must be able to respond appropriately to stressful conditions Monday through Friday. Some evening hours may be required.
