Requires a high school diploma or GED and a Pharmacy Technician permit from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. Higher levels require an associate degree, CPhT certification, and up to five years of experience.
Position Title: Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Department: Pharmacy
General Description: The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician supports the provision of pharmaceutical care by performing routine, foundational technical tasks related to medication preparation, distribution, and inventory management under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This entry‑level role is designed to develop core inpatient pharmacy skills and support safe, timely medication delivery across inpatient care areas. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. While Awaiting Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Technician Permit Duties are limited to auxiliary supportive personnel functions, as permitted by Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy rules: Retrieves prescriptions, medication records, or files as directed. Performs clerical tasks including data entry, typing labels, and maintaining patient profiles. Performs secretarial tasks such as answering phones, filing, and basic documentation. Assists with maintaining a clean, organized, and orderly pharmacy environment. Participates in inventory support activities including monitoring, pricing, dating, invoicing, stocking, and assisting with purchase order preparation. Assists with accounting‑related support tasks such as basic recordkeeping, accounts receivable support, third‑party billing, and posting under supervision. After Receipt of Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Technician Permit Prepares, labels, and delivers medications accurately and timely under pharmacist supervision. Fills automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) and unit dose cassettes according to established procedures. Restocks and maintains crash carts, emergency kits, and medication supplies as assigned. Performs basic sterile and non‑sterile compounding under supervision and according to USP and departmental standards. Assists with batch preparation of sterile products as directed. Maintains cleanliness, organization, and inventory in assigned pharmacy areas, including IV rooms and preparation spaces. Accurately enters, fills, and documents medication orders in the pharmacy system and electronic medical record. Assists with receiving, unpacking, checking in, and shelving medications and supplies from vendors. Assists with maintaining IV room stock of base fluids, additives, and supplies. Assists with automated dispensing cabinet setup, stocking, and coordination. Helps maintain logs of medications and supplies requiring reorder. Assists with stock replenishment of decentralized or satellite pharmacy locations as requested. Participates in daily physical inventory counts and reports unreconciled discrepancies promptly to pharmacy leadership. Complies with all regulatory, safety, infection control, and quality standards. Participates in technician training, onboarding, and competency assessments. Escalates questions, discrepancies, or safety concerns to pharmacists or senior technicians appropriately.
