Job Summary The Hospital Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in preparing, dispensing, and managing medications for patients in an acute care hospital setting. This position supports sterile compounding operations, automated dispensing cabinet management, medication distribution, inventory control, and regulatory compliance while ensuring accurate and timely pharmacy services for patient care areas. Key Responsibilities Prepare, package, label, and distribute medications under pharmacist supervision. Read and interpret physician medication orders and enter patient orders into the pharmacy computer system. Fill medication orders and deliver medications to patient care units accurately and efficiently. Prepare compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) according to pharmacy SOPs and sterile compounding regulations. Assist pharmacists with sterile and hazardous IV compounding activities. Maintain sterile IV rooms, pharmacy workspaces, and compounding equipment according to infection control and quality assurance standards. Stock and maintain automated dispensing cabinets, emergency medication trays, and floor stock medications. Manage medication inventory, including wholesaler orders, returns, expired medications, and medication packaging. Process employee prescriptions and maintain required pharmacy documentation and records. Conduct pharmacy inspections and complete daily, weekly, and monthly quality assurance activities. Maintain compliance with Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy regulations and hospital pharmacy procedures. Monitor temperatures, environmental controls, and sterile compounding documentation. Work safely with needles, sharps, chemotherapy agents, and hazardous medications. Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and accuracy in all pharmacy operations. Complete continuing education and competency requirements to maintain certification and compliance. Job Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED. Ability to obtain Pharmacy Technician licensure through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire. Must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification or sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam within 180 days of hire. Must obtain CPhT certification within 365 days of hire. Ability to successfully complete all in-house sterile compounding training, competency validations, and annual education requirements. Accurate typing and computer skills. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ability to work with needles, sharps, hazardous medications, and chemotherapy agents safely. Ability to perform repetitive sterile compounding tasks while maintaining aseptic technique. Preferred One year of hospital pharmacy or retail pharmacy experience preferred. Completion of the American College of Apothecaries (ACA) Comprehensive Sterile Compounding Certificate preferred. Experience with sterile compounding, IV preparation, automated dispensing cabinets, or hospital pharmacy systems. Familiarity with pharmacy inventory management and medication distribution processes. Compensation & Schedule Schedule varies based on department needs and staffing coverage. May include weekdays, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
