The LPN administers direct patient care in the dialysis unit, including initiating treatments and conducting nursing assessments. They are responsible for monitoring patient signs, reporting symptoms, and providing health education to patients and caregivers.
Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited practical nursing school with a current Mississippi license and at least one year of clinical experience within the last three years. Certification in the Certified Hemodialysis LPN Program and IV therapy certification are required.
The Certified Hemodialysis LPN administers direct patient care in the dialysis unit under the supervision of the RN Nursing Supervisor, Charge Nurse, RN Team Leader or Physician; performs assigned tasks independently and efficiently after instruction from designated medical personnel; is responsible for specific areas of the hemodialysis treatment including initiation of the dialysis treatment, preparation of safety equipment devices, conducting focused nursing assessments contributing to ongoing data collection and comprehensive assessment by the RN; observes, records and reports patient signs and symptoms to the appropriate person; provides health teaching to the patient and their caregiver.
Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing; has current license or temporary permit to practice in Mississippi; has (1) year clinical experience within the past (3) years; is certified in the expanded role of IV therapy (if Hemodialysis certified after April 1, 2007); successful completion of the education and practice of the Certified Hemodialysis LPN Program and provides certification; on-the-job training specific to hemodialysis; ability to use a variety of physical motions in day-to-day activities including standing, turning, bending, stooping, lifting without experiencing fatigue; willingness to assist with lifting patients and preparing equipment such as beds, chairs, etc. when indicated; ability to exercise tact and patience in dealing with chronically ill patients and their families; ability to accept supervision from designated medical personnel and to function as a member of the hemodialysis care team.
