Perform various venipuncture techniques to collect and process blood specimens for diagnostic purposes. Maintain laboratory supplies, ensure quality control compliance, and interact with patients to allay fears during procedures.
A High School Diploma or GED is required. Certification from a nationally recognized phlebotomy board (such as ASCP, NHA, or AMT) is preferred.
Phlebotomist Certification from a Nationally Recognized Board/Agency: ASCP; or CVAS-Certified Venous Access Specialist; or ASPT-American Society Phlebotomist Technician; or NHA-National Healthcareer Association; or NCCT-Phlebotomy National Center for Competency Testing; or ACAH-American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals; or Medical2; or NPA-National Phlebotomy Association; or Phlebotomy Technician from MedCA, or Becksford, or AMT-American Medical Technologists, or NPS-National Performance Specialist, AAH- American Allied Health, or NHOC-National Healthcare Organization Certification certifications. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. Interpersonal skills to allay pay patient fears and interact with staff. Ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Ability to comply with clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. Ability to complete and maintain documents and records. Responsibilities Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles. Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explains procedures, allays fears, and elicits cooperation. Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures. Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays. Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations. Complies with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.
