WIC Professional GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under general supervision of the Program Director, certifies eligibility of Program participants by determining nutritional risk for women who are pregnant I up to 6 months postpartum I breastfeeding up to 1year, as well as children from birth to age 5 years; provides and assures nutrition education to Program participants CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES Functions as the competent professional authority for determination of program eligibility and certification: following assessment of individual anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary data, either certifies or denies participation in the Program on the basis of nutritional risk Conducts any or all of the following procedures necessary for determining nutritional risk: measurement of length/height and weight, hemoglobin, completes required certification procedures in Focus (WIC software) Completes intake procedures for program applicants: interview applicants to obtain demographic information and determine income eligibility.
Provides nutrition and health education in the areas of maternal and child health to WIC participants in accordance with Program guidelines.
Refers WIC participants to other health or social services as needed including documentation and follow-up of referrals made.
Participates in development of nutrition education materials; serves as qualified speaker for nutrition topics to community groups as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS Use accurate techniques for length/height, weight, hemoglobin Use universal precautions for exposure to blood or bodily fluids Complete health and diet questions in Focus as appropriate for each participant being certified Provide health and nutrition education appropriate to individual participant within guidelines Make and document formal and informal referrals when indicated or requested by client Implement department's Service Excellence standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS B.A./B.S. degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition, or closely related field OR RN current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing If applicable, must maintain current Registered Nurse license.
