About the role

The Medical Assistant provides patient care by obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and administering vaccines. They are also responsible for scheduling referrals, managing follow-up tracking, and maintaining accurate electronic health records.

Responsibilities

  • Assist provider and other clinical staff with obtaining basic vitalinformation preparing patient for examination, treatment and minorsurgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates competence in the clinical skills necessary to carry outassigned job duties.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood and other samples frompatients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Administer ordered medical and/or vaccines.
  • Schedule referrals for patients with specialist or outpatient as requestedby the provider. Complete appropriate forms or requisitions needed forreferrals or lab testing, including appropriate CPT/ICD-10 coding.
  • Responsible for tracking system for follow-up appointments related tooffice visits, laboratory tests and procedures to regularly follow patientsmonitoring disease status.
  • Provide appropriate and timely documentation in the patient’s electronichealth record using standardized workflows and processes.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of IPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and otherfederal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. Provide informationto appropriate regulatory agencies, (i.e. health department).
  • Be aware of what is happening in clinic/department and the organizationby attending clinic/department meetings, reading emails and regularlychecking information on the organization’s intranet site.
  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, OSHA, Safety and Risk Managementguidelines.
  • Maintain compliance and behave in a manner consistent with all policiesand procedures, including but not limited to Compliance, HIPAA andpersonnel workplace rules.
  • Behave in a manner consistent with all Compliance and HIPAA policiesand procedures.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
  • Demonstrate initiative to improve quality and customer service bystriving to exceed customer expectations.
  • Balance team and individual responsibilities; be open and objective toother’s views; give and welcome feedback; contribute to positive teamgoals; and put the success of the team above own interests.
  • Perform other duties as requested by Clinic Administrator to facilitate thesmooth and effective operations of the office.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma required if work is performed in a complex CLIA lab.

Experience

  • One (1) year of computer data entry experience required. One (1) year previous clinical experience in a medical office preferred.
  • License(s)/Certification(s): American Heart Association (BCLS) required within 30 days of hire. IA/IL Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire. IA/IL Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in State(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire.

Requirements

A high school diploma is required for complex lab work, along with one year of computer data entry experience. BCLS certification and mandatory reporter training are required within specific timeframes after hire.
