About the role

The Speech Language Pathologist evaluates patients with communication and swallowing disorders to develop and implement individualized treatment plans. They collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to provide rehabilitation services and ensure accurate clinical documentation and billing.

Overview The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP or Speech Therapist) is responsible for the evaluation of patients and development of their treatment programs in accordance with the scope of the profession, the State Practice Act, Licensure and policies of UnityPoint Health.

They function as an integral part of the rehabilitation team and provide rehabilitation services to patients across the lifespan, targeting ages specific to their clinical setting.

The Speech Therapist is responsible for accurate documentation and billing as well as maintaining communication with referring providers and teammates, as ethically appropriate, to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care best suited for the environment in which care is provided. (ie: acute hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, in the home, etc.) Why UnityPoint Health?

Responsibilities

Care Delivery Evaluates individuals who have medical problems or other health related conditions that limit their abilities to speak, communicate, swallow, and/or perform functional activities in their daily lives. Develops, implements and delegates treatment plan with individualized goals to promote the ability to speak, communicate, swallow, and restore function and prevent disability. Coordinates plan of treatment with persons served, families and other disciplines. Monitors response of persons served during therapeutic interventions. Supports evidence-based practices. Communicates and collaborates the plan of treatment with persons served, families and the interdisciplinary team. Displays creativity and innovation in the delivery of services. Timely and accurate documentation and billing according to regulatory and third party requirements. Documentation and billing for services exhibit an understanding of requirements and ethical practice. Manages resources to maintain efficient and effective operations. Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and maximize patient experience. Professionalism and Personal Development Demonstrates professionalism and personal growth in daily actions. Promotes professional rehabilitation objectives among interdisciplinary team members Consistently utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area). Participates in process improvement for enhancement of care delivery and clinical excellence. Fosters professional relationships that offer opportunities for enhanced patient access and care delivery. Exhibits flexibility with assignments including hours of op0eration to meet business and customer needs. Exhibits willingness to accept and learn new skills. Basic UPH Performance Criteria Demonstrates the UPHDM Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple talks until additional support can be obtained.

Qualifications

Education: Graduated from an accredited program in respective field.

Experience

  • Experience in specialty area.
  • License (s/Certifications: Current Iowa license as an SLP. Current BLS (CPR). Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional backgrounds. Knowledge of basic computer skills. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred.

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

Requirements

Candidates must have graduated from an accredited program in the field and hold a current Iowa SLP license and BLS certification. Experience in a specialty area and a valid driver's license are also required.
