About the role

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile techniques, and assisting physicians during surgical procedures. They also manage the sterilization of instruments and ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the process.

This is a Full Time Role: Monday-Friday 6AM-2PM

Key responsibilities

1. Ability to correlate clinical data with patient's care under the direction of the clinical leader/registered nurse.

2. Ability to set priorities.

3. Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency throughout the clinical areas of the facility.

4. Ability to communicate well with patients, families, Teammates, physicians, other members of the healthcare team, etc.

5. Checks updated schedule every morning and assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.

6. Clean instruments and equipment after use and return to proper area for storage or processing.

7. Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.

8. Differentiate sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment.

9. Prepare and monitor high level disinfectant solutions.

10. Collect data and maintain sterilization logs.

11. Participates in the orientation of new OR staff.

12. Demonstrates understanding of operating room equipment according to manufacturers’ guidelines, policy and procedures.

13. Promotes physical comfort and provides emotional support and safety for patients. Respect patient’s right to privacy, dignitary, and confidentiality.

14. Assembles cases according to schedule and preference cards.

15. Practice and monitor aseptic and sterile techniques.

16. Handle specimens in accordance with facility policies and procedures.

17. Assist with housekeeping tasks.

18. Participate in the surgical time-out process per facility policy.

19. Assist with positioning patient relevant to procedure with awareness of body alignment, circulation, and pressure points.

20. Be accountable for accuracy of sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the registered nurse.

21. Maintains adequate room supplies, assists in stocking and replenishing, outdating and preparation of supplies. Notifies appropriate staff member to order supplies as needed.

22. Reviews and updates physician preference cards as needed.

23. Assists physician and anesthesia personnel as needed.

24. Cleans equipment and operating room according to procedure.

25. Maintains a neat and organized environment that promotes safety.

26. Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility.

27. Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor and requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor.

28. Completes all employee/patient event and variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by policy.

29. Attends unit-based staff meetings and demonstrates review of minutes for any meetings missed.

30. Strives to be professional, courteous, helpful, and cooperative. Interacts with all patients/ families, visitors, and employees in a mature, positive manner.

31. Complies with the OSHA and AAAHC standards, HIPAA regulations, and all facility policies and procedures.

32. Performs all other duties assigned by manager.

Qualifications

  • Education: Required: Graduate of an Accredited program for surgical technologists
  • Experience:

Preferred: At least one year of surgical technologist experience

Physical & environmental demands

Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients more than 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling, and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape.

Requirements

Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program. At least one year of experience as a surgical technologist is preferred.
