Manage outpatient care for Otolaryngology patients in the Voice & Swallowing Division, including conducting independent clinics and evaluating new and follow-up patients. Act as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient staff to coordinate care and educate patients on treatment plans.
Must be a licensed or eligible Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (AGPNP, ANP, or FNP). Requires the ability to perform specific therapeutic procedures and maintain all necessary state licenses and certifications.
Summary The APP (physician assistant/nurse practitioner) will participate in the management of primarily outpatient care for Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery patients under the care of the supervising physicians in the Voice & Swallowing Division. The APP will have independent clinics as well as assist attending physicians in the clinic by evaluating new and follow-up patients, performing histories and physical exams, ordering of ancillary tests, patient education, phone calls for prescriptions/lab results and coordination of care. The APP will perform as liaison among inpatient and outpatient nurses, nurse coordinators and physicians to provide the highest level of patient care. They will serve as a dedicated health care professional who will review test results and educate patients on their treatment plan. In addition, the APP will become the easily identifiable expert from the service who will return any patient telephone calls and answer their questions in a timely manner. This PA/NP position will work primarily at our Mount Pleasant location at the MUSC Health Evelyn Trammell Institute for Voice and Swallowing clinic. Job Duties Provides direct care to patients through the following activities: Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief Laryngoscopy Stroboscopy Tracheostomy tube changes Modified barium swallow studies (with speech pathology) Incision and drainage procedures Minor biopsy FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan. Documents and bills for direct care provided Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law Will require staffing of independent clinics at Rutledge Tower, Mount Pleasant and/or North Charleston as needed.
