About the role

Performs complex laboratory tests and applies medical technology principles to provide reliable results for patient diagnosis and treatment. Assists the administrative director with quality control, validation, and may serve as a section supervisor.

Position Status: Per diem (PRN)

Position purpose

This position performs a variety of laboratory tests, many of which are complex, involving numerous steps and techniques, and requires the use of professional judgment.

Professional application of the principles, theories and techniques of medical technology are used to produce consistently reliable test results which aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Trains other laboratory personnel and provides input in job performance.

This position assists the laboratory administrative director in performance of general laboratory duties to include, validation, quality control, performance improvement, policy and procedure maintenance, and nursing and physician support.

This position may be designated as a section supervisor in an area of licensure to provide full supervision of the laboratory.

This position may act as the back-up administrative director when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Clinical laboratory, Medical Technology, Chemical or Biological Sciences or educational qualifications as outlined in Florida Licensure Administrative rule 64B3-5 for a medical technologist position.
  • 2.
  • State of Florida licensed as a clinical laboratory technologist in any or all of the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Immunohematology and Microbiology 3.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of full-time technical experience in licensed specialties to include test interpretation, quality control and instrument maintenance 4.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • 5.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to multi-task while working in a high-volume work environment required.
  • 6.
  • Able to work effectively with team members, supervisors, patients and their families to accomplish team goals.
  • 7.
  • Ability to plan, organize and perform job associated tasks to completion.
  • Willing to adjust personal schedule to accommodate patient needs.
  • 8.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers and proficiency in the use of an electronic health record system required, CPSI/Evident preferred.
  • Knowledge of web-based programs and Microsoft Office suite of products including Outlook, Word and Excel preferred.
  • 9.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • 10.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Language skills

  • 1.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English 2.
  • Ability to speak a relevant second language is a plus.
  • 3.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, medical staff, and hospital staff.
  • 4.
  • Ability to identify and implement appropriate patient communication strategies and overcome accessibility barriers, as required 5.
  • Ability to use Language Line or find certified interpreter for interpretation as needed

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a clinical laboratory science and a State of Florida license as a clinical laboratory technologist. Candidates must have at least five years of technical experience and BLS certification.
