The Radiological Technologist I performs entry-level-to-routine (journey-level) radiological work.

Work involves performing a variety of diagnostic x-ray procedures to obtain and record interpretable diagnostic information for medical staff.

Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Operates radiological equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes.

Coordinates with nursing and medical staff to ensure that appropriate preparatory procedures are performed.

Reviews developed x-rays, ultrasounds, or computer-generated information to determine whether images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.

Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with policies and regulations, and to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Records patient data and treatment records and assists in the preparation of reports.

Schedules patients for routine studies.

Assists in performing specialized radiographic procedures.

Assists in reviewing stock levels of needed supplies and equipment.

Assists patients to and from treatment areas and positions patients for scans, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures.

May clean, repair, maintain, and make minor adjustments to instruments and equipment.

Performs related work as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Performs x-ray diagnostic routine exams/procedures and operates GE RFX radiological equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes as ordered by facility providers. Operates the Carestream Computed Radiography Cassette Readers to process x-rays and determine whether images are of diagnostic quality. Utilizes the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) applications Viztek & OnePacs to transmit studies for interpretation by radiologist.

Utilizes the electronic medical record Practice Partner to coordinate with nursing, medical staff, and clinic staff to ensure that appropriate preparatory procedures are performed.

Greets patients, assists with gathering pertinent information needed for the medical appointment.

Assists with transporting patients to and from ancillary departments within the clinic.

Keeps x-ray & ultrasound exam rooms clean, organized and stocked with appropriate supplies.

Schedules and prepares patients for x-ray & ultrasound appointments.

Performs administrative procedures to include phone calls, logs, appointments, and other clerical duties.

Charting, maintaining equipment, assisting with patient care, and maintaining the overall environment.

Performs High Level Disinfection procedures for the endocavity transducer in compliance with Joint Commission standards.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (KSAs):

Knowledge of psychology and related disciplines

Knowledge of treatment techniques and practices

Skills in interviewing patients

Skills in forensic assessment, including violence risk assessments and competency to stand trial.

Ability to assist with conducting diagnostic interviews.

Ability to conduct individual, group, and family psychotherapy.

Ability to develop plans for implementing and monitoring rehabilitation activities in skill acquisition and behavior management.

Ability to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Current Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiology (R). Current certification/license by Texas Medical Board as a Medical Radiological Technologist (CMRT).

Valid CPR certification.

Initial Screening Criteria

Six months of experience in radiological technology work required.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza.

All these diseases are vaccine preventable.

As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.

In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
