The Pharmacy Intern supports the delivery of patient care by preparing medications and processing prescriptions under pharmacist supervision. They are responsible for maintaining sterile environments, filling medication carts, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy and hold a Pharmacy Intern license from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. A high school diploma or GED is required, and prior experience as a registered pharmacy technician is preferred.

Works closely with all pharmacy personnel to assure safe and efficient delivery of patient care. Serves in a professional capacity in patient care areas. Assures departmental policies and procedures are being followed, medication orders are being processed in a timely manner, and the quality of products dispensed meets established guidelines. Assists in the preparation and/or selection of medications. Assures all orders are prepared accurately, are labeled neatly and correctly, and verified by a pharmacist prior to dispensing according to departmental procedures. Participates in medication cart filling and assures that all doses dispensed are consistent with the medication cart fill list. Initiates and processes medication incident reports and adverse drug reaction reports as needed. Answers phone calls promptly and politely by stating departmental area and name. Communicates problems, unique patient needs and other necessary information to on-coming staff for enhanced continuity of care. Communicates with co-workers when leaving the work area. Follows aseptic technique and infection control practices in the preparation of sterile products. Accurately processes outpatient prescriptions and provides oral and written counseling information to the patient and/or parent under pharmacist supervision. Participates in departmental data collection and reporting of Drug Use, Evaluation, Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities within the pharmacy. Routinely checks all available means of communication including e-mail and mailbox. Understands the legal limitations of a pharmacist intern and refers problems or situations requiring professional judgement to a pharmacist. Performs other duties as assigned. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy. Prior experience as a registered pharmacy technician is preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Licensed with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Intern.
