The Lab Technician/Phlebotomist is responsible for accurate blood draws, specimen collection, and processing while ensuring patient safety and comfort. They must maintain laboratory equipment, document data in the EMR system, and adhere to strict regulatory and safety standards.

Job summary

The Lab Technician/Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection with accuracy and efficiency, while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.

Essential duties & responsibilities

  • To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection following established protocols
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers and ensure accurate labeling of specimens
  • Prepare patients for procedures, explain processes, and provide reassurance as needed
  • Process, handle, store, and transport specimens in accordance with safety and regulatory standards
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) system
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, perform routine quality control, and report malfunctions
  • Follow infection control, Universal Precautions, and OSHA safety guidelines
  • Collaborate with providers and care team members to coordinate patient care
  • Monitor inventory and notify appropriate staff of supply needs
  • Respond to patient inquiries and support lab-related communication workflows
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, and/or Training

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a medical setting
  • California CPT I or CPT II license
  • Current BLS certification
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience with EMR systems

Preferred

  • Experience in outpatient/primary care setting
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Experience with eClinicalWorks

Travel required or Special Conditions

  • May be required to travel between clinic sites; must have reliable transportation if applicable
  • Subject to a criminal background check prior to employment;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License if travel between clinic sites is required.
  • Must have and maintain state required automobile insurance coverage; and
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment physical and TB screening requirements and maintain any required clearances in accordance with HarborCHC policy.

Physical requirements

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust.

Hours of operations

HarborCHC is open Monday-Thursday 7

  • 00am-7:00pm,
  • Friday 8:00 am-5:00pm, and
  • Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm.
