About the role

Responsible for diagnosing and treating patients in Gynecology Oncology while coordinating care between the healthcare team and families. The role involves performing physical assessments, ordering diagnostic tests, and managing chemotherapy toxicities.

Under general supervision, and in collaboration with physician colleagues, responsible for diagnosing and treating patients. Provides continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between the health care team, patient and patient’s family. Coordinates care to ensure quality, effective care and patient safety. Serves as link integrating relevant research and best practices; and other duties as assigned.

Essential job functions

Clinical Responsibilities

In clinical collaboration with the attending physician, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare provider team.

Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting.

Orders, obtains, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.

In collaboration with physician providers, establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings.

In collaboration with physician providers, designs, orders, and documents appropriate treatment plans including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results.

Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.

Communicates plan of care with appropriate providers including the attending physician, the primary care provider, the referring provider, the nursing staff, and the case manager.

Communicates plan of care patients and family members. Provides patient and family instructions related to the plan of care, disease process, new treatment plans, and medication regiments.

Renders peri-operative care

Reviews laboratory results with patients, monitoring for toxicities of chemotherapy, and assisting with symptom management

Coordinates insurance authorizations, outpatient scans and procedures, specialty referrals

Assists patients with FMLA submissions and other necessary paperwork

Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team, including potential coordination of care for inpatients (limited/minor role)

  • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Master of Science degree in Nursing with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program; Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland
  • Valid state APRN Recognition (must meet education requirement (s) for state recogniton and obtain within six (6) months of hire)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and BLS by the American Heart Association is preferred
  • DEA and CDS eligible
  • CPR required
  • A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs
  • Demonstrates highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters
  • Maintains updated mandatory training
  • Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area

Total Rewards The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position.

Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.

Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.

Requirements

Requires a Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner certification, and licensure in the State of Maryland. Preference is given to candidates with at least one year of Registered Nurse experience and ACLS/BLS certification.
