The LPN is responsible for delivering nursing care under RN direction, focusing on maintaining a safe therapeutic milieu for behavioral health patients. Key duties include medication dosing accuracy, narcotic counts, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team.
Candidates must hold a current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in New York State. A high school diploma or GED is required.
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible and accountable for the delivery of nursing care under the direction of an RN. She/he implements the Nursing Service standards of care and practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served and the areas of clinical practice. Maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu by fostering an awareness of the Behavioral Health Services patient population. Communicate respect by honoring personal space and using a non-threatening/non-challenging/ non-judgmental approach.
1. Demonstrates competence in nursing care practices and performs technical skills appropriate to the clinical area and needs of the patient population served. Follows the established Infection Control Policy.2. Communicates therapeutically during every patient interaction/encounter. Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patient's rights. Maintains dignity and confidentiality of the patient and follows the Patient Identification Policy.3. Cooperates with other health care disciplines in the coordination of patient care activities.4. Be an active participant in building/ensuring team spirit by collaborating and maintaining effective and timely communication with the members of the interdisciplinary team and with personnel from other departments.5. Delegates tasks appropriately and is accountable for her/his practice within the scope of the LPN role.6. Adheres to OASAS and other regulatory guidelines.7. Adheres to the unit's standards of care and practice. 8. Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff, applies appropriate precautions and protocols.9. Participates in the orientation of personnel to the unit.10. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings11. Utilizes opportunities for clinical learning and participates in continuing education to meet established requirements and for own career development.12. Follows St. John’s Riverside Hospital attendance policy. 13. Uses two patient identifiers to ensure correct patient.14. Checks for alertness/ sedation prior to dosing patient.15. Verifies MD written order to computer order for dosing / pick up accuracy.16. Maintaining daily narcotic count to ensure accuracy of the safe.17. Updates lighthouse (central registry) as needed to ensure dosing accuracy.18. Methadone medication bottles when empty should be purged and rinsed prior to discarding.19. When empty takeout bottles are returned, name must be crossed off with black permanent marker.
