The Sedation RN is responsible for administering and monitoring moderate sedation for patients undergoing outpatient vascular and interventional procedures. This includes performing pre-procedure assessments, monitoring vital signs, and responding to medical emergencies to ensure patient safety.
Candidates must be a California licensed RN with BLS and ACLS certifications and at least three years of nursing experience. A minimum of two years in a procedural or critical care environment, such as ICU, ER, or PACU, is required.
Vascular Surgery Medical Group is a busy and growing vascular practice specializing in minimally invasive vascular procedures, vascular ultrasound, and patient-centered care. Our mission is to improve patients' quality of life through advanced vascular treatment and compassionate care. We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled, and safety-focused Sedation Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Angio Suite team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring patient safety and comfort during outpatient vascular procedures requiring moderate sedation.
The Sedation Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the administration and monitoring of moderate sedation for patients undergoing vascular and interventional procedures in an outpatient setting. The Sedation RN works closely with physicians and the procedural team to assess patients, administer medications, continuously monitor patient status, respond to emergencies, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards. This position requires advanced assessment skills, critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly and effectively to changes in patient condition. Reports To: Angio Suite Nursing Director / Clinical Leadership Per Diem Position Key Responsibilities Perform comprehensive pre-procedure patient assessments, including review of medical history, allergies, medications, and procedural readiness Administer moderate sedation medications under physician direction and according to established protocols Continuously monitor patient vital signs, oxygen saturation, cardiac rhythm, respiratory status, and level of consciousness during procedures Recognize and respond appropriately to adverse reactions, complications, or changes in patient condition Maintain accurate sedation records and clinical documentation in the EMR Ensure compliance with sedation policies, nursing standards, and accreditation requirements Assist physicians during vascular, angiography, and interventional procedures Administer IV medications, fluids, and treatments as ordered Verify informed consent and procedural readiness prior to sedation administration Provide patient and family education regarding procedural expectations, sedation, recovery, and discharge instructions Participate in emergency response situations, including airway management and resuscitation efforts Maintain emergency equipment, crash carts, and medication supplies Collaborate with PACU nurses to ensure safe patient handoff and recovery Participate in quality assurance, infection control, and accreditation readiness activities Follow all Federal, State, OSHA, HIPAA, CMS, AAAHC, and practice policies and procedures
Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license required Current BLS certification required Current ACLS certification required Minimum three (3) years of nursing experience required Minimum two (2) years of procedural, critical care, emergency room, ICU, PACU, cath lab, interventional radiology, or surgery center experience required Demonstrated experience administering and monitoring moderate sedation Strong understanding of cardiac monitoring, airway management, and emergency response procedures Experience with IV therapy and medication administration Experience with EMR systems such as Athena, Epic, or similar Excellent critical thinking, assessment, and clinical judgment skills Strong communication and patient education abilities
Experience in vascular surgery, interventional radiology, cath lab, or outpatient procedural environment Conscious/moderate sedation certification or advanced sedation training Experience in AAAHC or CMS-accredited facilities Experience with ultrasound-guided IV placement Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
Work Schedule 3 Days per week (Thursday & Friday, 3rd day is flexible) Day Shift No major holidays No routine weekends Occasional overtime based on procedural volume Travel between office locations may occasionally be required Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods during procedures Ability to respond rapidly to medical emergencies Frequent use of computers, monitoring equipment, and EMR systems Ability to assist with patient positioning and transfers Occasional lifting of equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds Ability to work in a fast-paced procedural environment while maintaining exceptional attention to detail Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and clinical staff
Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal Sedation RN has experience in ICU, ER, PACU, Cath Lab, or Interventional Radiology and is comfortable independently managing moderate sedation while maintaining the highest level of patient safety. This individual remains calm under pressure, possesses strong clinical judgment, and excels in a collaborative outpatient procedural environment.
