Provide direct care and support for individuals with developmental disabilities in a residential setting, implementing individual support and behavior plans. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living, medication administration, and promoting autonomy through advocacy.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Oregon Driver's license. Preference is given to candidates with one year of experience in health or human services and the ability to pass a criminal background check.
The Direct Support Professional is responsible for a variety of duties related to the overall care of individuals with developmental disabilities who reside in residential programs. This includes direct care of program individuals and implementation of individual support plans and behavior support plans. Direct Support Professionals are required to perform all duties in accordance with State of Oregon Administrative Rules, related to the specific program they are working with.
Typically, required to maintain routine work without regular supervision. Ability to anticipate and plan for needed or upcoming changes. Will occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees, so it is imperative that they are knowledgeable on SLA’s policies and procedures, NADSP’s code of ethics and operations of each home. New or unusual work is performed with a moderate degree of supervision, assistance, and review. Must be able to work unsupervised and alone with individuals supported as well as foresee issues associated with own work and identify future needs for operations or activities. Be able to see what needs to be done and do it. Create a culture of responsibility while still being able to have fun.

All duties and responsibilities listed are subject to change and are further defined by management personnel for each work location and may vary according to the personal preferences and agreements with the person served. Activities of Daily Living: At the start of a work shift each DSP is required to orient themselves to the current operations of the home and the needs of people served by reviewing all information available since last work shift Maintains all records and documentation as required and replaces forms as needed Provide a calm and stable living environment and attend to persons rights to respect and dignity Ensures the working and living environment (including vehicle) is maintained in a clean and safe manner and corrects or reports any unsafe or unsanitary conditions Assists in the sanitary preparation, service and storage of food according to the individuals’ preference within the guidelines of specified diets Assisting with grocery shopping while involving the person served as much as possible Encourages and assists people to wear appropriate attire according to scheduled activities and weather and provides support as needed Ensures laundry is done in a timely and sanitary manner including assisting with washing, drying, storing and labeling Is responsive and proactive in providing necessary supervision, training and support Assists with personal hygiene activities including, but not limited to, bathing, toileting, shaving, tooth brushing, nail care, menses, dressing and incontinence issues Reviewing and updating Personal Property Inventory Maintaining individuals’ financial records as negotiated Provides quality medical and health supports: Follows procedures for preparation, administration and documentation of medications and treatments Accurately checking in medications, treatments, Medication and Treatment Administration Records, and physician’s orders Notifies supervisor of any discrepancies or signs of side effects Independently identifies the need and reorders medications and treatments as needed Ensures all therapies and doctors’ orders are implemented as ordered Maintains an awareness of changes in the individual’s health status, follows protocols that apply, documents the event, and reports as required or indicated Assisting individuals to attend medical appointments Ensuring information provided during the appointment is documented as required Enriching Lives Through Advocacy and Role Modeling: Assists persons served to communicate their personal needs, wishes and preferences to the appropriate person(s) Mentoring person-centered approaches to the entirety of the teams you work with Providing input into or completing the Person-Centered Information Engages persons served in meaningful use of free time per individual preferences and Individual Support Planning (ISP) agreements Encourages individuals’ decision making and promotes autonomy Informs and educates persons served regarding rules, regulations and laws that apply and the consequences of failing to abide by them Informs and educates persons served regarding correspondence to them and assists with follow up and/or action as requested or needed General
Participates in personal and organizational development Successfully completes all required orientation, training and health testing Maintains all certifications and licenses as required throughout employment May be required to participate in searches for lost persons per policy Completing the Vehicle Checklist and addresses any concerns Training other staff and documenting on the orientation checklist Providing relevant feedback to staff being trained and supervisor Accurately filing documents within specified time frames Initiating and documenting fire drills Completing Share the Wealth Duties Forecasting departmental projections Attends and participates in required meetings and training Performs other duties as assigned
