Primary Function

The Registered Nurse (RN) assumes responsibility and accountability for a set of assigned patients for a designated period. This role involves collaboration with physicians and the multidisciplinary patient care team to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • 1.
  • Receive patients for admission and complete the admission intake process including, but not limited to, obtaining a detailed history, obtaining and reconciling patient medications, performing a comprehensive initial nursing physical assessment, obtaining consents, and performing admission screens and education as indicated.
  • 2.
  • Performs age-appropriate and comprehensive initial assessments and reassessments.
  • 3.
  • Develops individualized care plans in partnership with patients and families.
  • 4.
  • Evaluates patient progress toward attainment of goals, revising plan of care when indicated.
  • 5.
  • Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, according to the nursing process.
  • 6.
  • Participates in continuing education and maintains certifications and licensure as appropriate.
  • 7.
  • Obtains and records vital signs.
  • 8.
  • Provides basic bedside care.
  • 9.
  • Manages basic life support needs.
  • 10.
  • Prioritize and reprioritize patient care needs considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • 11.
  • Supervises and delegates to unlicensed assistive personnel based on job description and patient needs.
  • 12.
  • Builds teamwork when supervising and delegating to others.
  • 13.
  • Works directly under physicians, assisting during exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments.
  • 14.
  • Prepares, administers, and records prescribed medications within a specified time frame.
  • 15.
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • 16.
  • Demonstrates competency and performs nursing skills to licensure and scope of practice.
  • 17.
  • Performs routine specimen collections according to physician’s order.
  • 18.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • 19.
  • Inspects and operates medical equipment appropriately.
  • 20.
  • Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  • 21.
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by the physician.
  • Educates patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as providing referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.

  • Monitors patient telemetry and notifies physician with any changes or concerns as needed.
  • 23.
  • Assists in mentoring other new RN staff to Mason District Hospital.
  • 24.
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  • 25.
  • Manages emergency situations professionally and in a calm manner.
  • 26.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the patients’ electronic health record.
  • 27.
  • May participate in interdisciplinary committees within the hospital that focus on patient care issues and needs.
  • 28.
  • Participates in unit and hospital-wide Performance Improvement Program.
  • 29.
  • May assist in the development of policies, protocols, and procedures that support patient safety through the Nursing Practice Council.
  • 30.
  • Adheres to nursing regulations at local, state, and federal levels.
  • 31.
  • Performs other related duties assigned to meet the needs of the organization.
  • 32.
  • Fosters a professional and confidential relationship with staff, encouraging open communication, trust, and a high standard of professionalism within the department and organization.

Qualifications

  • 1.
  • Graduated from an accredited Professional School of Nursing.
  • 2.
  • Must have valid Illinois Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • 3.
  • CPR Certification required.
  • Willing to obtain ACLS and PALS Certifications.
  • 4.
  • Compassionate, understanding, self-motivated, and able to communicate well with others.
  • 5.
  • Must be willing to cross train to other departments within Mason District Hospital.
  • 6.
  • Demonstrates competency in nursing skills.
  • 7.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • 8.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations.
  • 9.
  • Willing to receive on-the-job training on hospital policies and procedures.
  • 10.
  • Knowledgeable in Telemetry Monitoring or willing to learn.
  • 11.
  • Able to complete the orientation program within 12 weeks.
  • 12.
  • Must be able to perform basic computer proficiency.
  • 13.
  • Willing to learn and adhere to department and hospital electronic health record (EHR) documentation practices.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Physical demands for this position include the ability to sit, stand, and walk and the ability to change positions regularly throughout the shift. This position requires visual acuity, sense of smell, hearing, speaking, standing, walking, reaching, crouching, stooping, kneeling, keyboarding, gross and fine motor manipulation, pushing, pulling, and climbing ramps or stairs. Vision requirements for this position include near, far, and peripheral visual acuity and the employee must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

The employee must be able to lift 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally and lift/carry 1 to 10 lbs. frequently. Required use of tools or equipment is essential. Work is typically performed in and within the Med Surg Department. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery, contagious or infectious agents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk or stand for extended periods, required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must frequently assist in lifting and/or moving patients.

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Professional School of Nursing with a valid Illinois Registered Nurse Licensure and CPR certification. Proficiency in basic computer skills and a willingness to obtain ACLS and PALS certifications are also required.
