Who We Are
North Alabama Shoals Hospital is a 198-bed general acute care facility boasting spacious, private rooms for all patients, a 24-hour emergency department, medical and oncology services; medical/surgical inpatient units; and short-stay surgery units. Shoals also operates the region’s only in-patient acute rehabilitation facility, the J. W. Sommer Rehabilitation Unit, and the Shoals Senior Care Center, the Shoals’ only psychiatric unit dedicated to our senior adults.
Position Summary
Coordinates and provides pharmaceutical care for patients, collaborating with the interprofessional team to optimize safe, effective medication use. Reviews and verifies orders, manages drug therapy protocols, educates staff/patients, and supports quality and regulatory standards. Reports to the Director or Manager of Department.
- Essential functions
- Manages drug therapy protocols as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Reviews, interprets, and evaluates medication orders to identify, prevent, and resolve drug-related problems.
- Provides drug information and education to medical staff, healthcare professionals, patients, and pharmacy students.
- Documents interventions and outcomes for drug therapy quality improvement.
- Verifies medication orders for accuracy/completeness prior to entry; checks filled medications prepared by technicians; maintains proficiency with pharmacy automated systems and software.
- Manages patients in an outpatient anticoagulation clinic, including point-of-care testing, result evaluation, dosing, and scheduling.
- Participates in performance improvement and required continuing education.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Requirements (typical): Frequent standing, walking, sitting, keyboard entry, reaching, and repetitive hand/arm movements; occasional kneeling and squatting; light to moderate non-patient lifting/pushing/pulling as needed. Occasional biological and rare chemical exposures may occur.
Knowledge, skills & abilities
Education
Doctor of Pharmacy.
License
Current license with the state Board of Pharmacy.
Certifications
BCLS required; ACLS preferred.
Skills
Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in stressful environments. Rapid learning and navigation of multiple pharmacy/clinical software systems. Effective English communication (read, write, speak, and understand). Ability to complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.
