The Cardiac Technician performs non-invasive cardiac tests and monitors heart functions using various cardiology equipment. They are responsible for interpreting EKG results, maintaining equipment, and alerting medical staff to critical patient abnormalities.
Requires a high school diploma and knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Candidates must have a professional certification, an associate degree in health science, or three years of experience as a cardiac technician.

Performs cardiac tests and monitors patient heart functions using diverse cardiology equipment. As needed per department, employees place electrodes correctly for an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine or telemetry (holter) monitoring and operate machines correctly. Checks, calibrates, and maintains cardiology equipment to ensure proper operation and accurate test results. Provides care and counseling for cardiac patients to ensure their comfort and safety during cardiac tests and treatments. Alerts nurses or physicians of critical values, abnormalities, or changes in patient responses. Obtains and records patient information and medical histories; interprets electrocardiogram (EKG) results and generates factual written reports. In some departments, employees will monitor multiple patients at the same time while critically interpreting rhythms and communicating concerns effectively with staff. Safely disposes of controlled substances with an RN after a dose is administered to a patient. Qualifications High school diploma or its equivalent is required. Knowledge of basic cardiac anatomy and physiology. Working knowledge of basic and intermediate life threatening cardiac rhythms, special equipment used in cardiac testing, computers, and medical terminology. Must meet a minimum of one of the following criteria dependent on facility or department requirements needs as it may vary by needs: 1. Possess Certified Cardiographic Technician 2. Associate’s degree or higher in a health science field 3. Three years’ experience as a cardiac technician 4. Obtain Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT), Cardiac Rhythm Monitoring certification (CRAT) or National Telemetry Certification (National Telemetry Association) within one year into position.
