About the role

Collects venous and capillary blood samples from patients and performs EKG procedures. Processes laboratory specimens, including registering, centrifuging, and preparing samples for testing or send-outs.

Job Details Kettering Health Hamilton | Hamilton| Full Time | 1st Shift Responsibilities & Requirements Under supervision, may collect venous blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture on all nursing units and in the outpatient testing area. Instructs patients in the collection of urine samples in the outpatient area. Prepares the patient and collects samples for tolerance tests and other testing as required. May perform EKG procedures. May assist in transporting patients. Processes laboratory specimens which may include registering, ordering test, centrifuging, and preparing specimens for send outs, monitoring work lists and distributes patient results as requested. Assists in monitoring morgue activities if required. The working conditions include those usually experienced in clinical laboratory areas and on Nursing Units. Authorized to perform tasks in all areas trained as documented in the employee records. Job Responsibilities: Demonstrates up-to-date job knowledge. Demonstrates knowledge of, and adherence to, department policies and procedures. Adheres to safety (Universal Precautions), infection control and hazardous materials policies.

Completes work assignments in a timely manner.

Maintains knowledge of computer functions, reports any failures to the appropriate person.

Collects blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture. Routine rounds start at 5AM and occur hourly throughout the day. Emergency department, STAT and outpatient orders can occur at any time during the 24-hour day.

Completes work assignments in a timely manner. May be assigned to organize the work in the early morning and throughout the day.

Accurately identifies patients, labels specimens and delivers specimens to the correct department for testing.

Performs all computer functions necessary to obtain samples and makes them available for testing; collects appropriate specimens for tests ordered.

Assists in training of new personnel and maintains competency in all aspects of job.

Keeps own specimen collection equipment and general work area clean, orderly and stocked

Performs 12-lead ECG’s making quality tracings, transmits to and saves the tracings on disc for the ECG department. Job Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent.Phlebotomy or laboratory tech training program is preferred. 1. Ability to remember and consistently apply all the details necessary to collect and transport specimens properly and to use the laboratory computer. 2. Ability to write or print clearly. 3. Ability to accurately identify patients and recognize any differences in spelling of names or listing of hospital numbers. 4. Ability to communicate well to and get along with patients and other hospital and laboratory personnel. 5 Ability to learn to use basic computer programs. 6. Ability to work under pressure. 7. Demonstrates responsibility to patients and to other members of the health care team. 8. Ability to perform EKG testing if required. 9. Knowledge of medical terminology. 10. Ability to perform tests on CLIA waived test systems once trained and remain competent. 11. BLS - Basic Life Support required

Requirements

Requires a High School Diploma and BLS certification, with a preference for phlebotomy or laboratory technician training. Candidates should have the ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare staff.
