Provide medical and general ASL interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and guests. Collaborate with dispatchers and document interpretation activities according to hospital guidelines and ethics.

Position Summary

The American Sign Language (ASL) Medical Interpreter provides medical and general interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients/guests. Minimum Requirements Education High school graduate or GED Viable candidates may be requested to successfully complete a medical interpretation sign language competency assessment Experience N/A License/Registration/Certifications Nationally Certified by RID (CI, CT, NIC), NAD (NAD III+), or Certified BEI (Level II+) Preferred Requirements Preferred Education Associate or Bachelor's degree Successful completion of medical terminology and medical interpretation training Experience One-year experience interpreting in a healthcare environment, Preferred Preferred License/Registration/Certifications Nationally Certified by RID (CI, CT, NIC), NAD (NAD III+), or Certified BEI (Level II+) Core Job Responsibilities Must be proficient in ASL with strong verbal and written skills. Must be able to manage multiple tasks, assignments, and deadlines. Collaborates with Dispatcher to ensure that medical interpreter requests are met on a timely basis. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy. Must be available to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, on an as needed basis. Ensures that medical interpreter Code of Ethics is followed during encounters with staff and patients/guests. Assists employees to communicate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients/guests in culturally and linguistically appropriate styles and behaviors. Records & documents medical interpretation activities according to departmental guidelines, noting staff or patient’s concerns & issues related to risk management directives or violations of hospital policies. Other duties as assigned
