About the role

Provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. Perform echocardiography as part of the Internal Traveler Program across various clinical practice opportunities.

The Internal Traveler Program is an opportunity for healthcare professionals to explore the boundless possibilities at UVA Health.

Internal Traveler positions are: compensated competitively with other traveler positions, available in a wide variety of clinical practice opportunities, and are offered in 13-week blocks, which may be renewed up to a maximum of 39 weeks.

As an Echo Cardiac Sonographer at UVA Health, your expertise directly contributes to life-saving diagnoses and the success of a nationally recognized Heart & Vascular Center.

In this highly specialized role, you will deliver high-quality echocardiographic imaging that informs complex clinical decisions.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will help drive exceptional patient outcomes while contributing to a program known for innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence.

The Role As a Cardiac Sonographer in the Echocardiography Lab, you will operate at the intersection of advanced imaging technology and patient-centered care.

This is a dynamic, fast-paced clinical environment where precision, collaboration, and adaptability are essential.

On a typical day, you will: Perform comprehensive echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic and stress imaging, producing diagnostically accurate results Collaborate closely with cardiologists, fellows, and interdisciplinary care teams to support clinical decision-making Ensure image quality optimization and protocol adherence, maintaining the highest standards of diagnostic excellence Interact directly with patients, providing clear communication and compassionate care during procedures Contribute to a lab environment that supports quality assurance, accreditation standards, and continuous improvement initiatives Engage in a clinical ladder program, supporting your professional growth and advancement within the field You will encounter a wide range of cases, from routine diagnostic studies to complex cardiovascular conditions, reflective of UVA Health’s role as a tertiary referral center serving patients across the region.

Experience

  • No experience required; 2 years relevant experience preferred
  • Licensure: RCS or RDCS with CCI or RCVT with ARDMS certification within 12 months of hire. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Physical demands

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, and traveling, driving (occasionally for outreach clinics); reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: Manipulation of ultrasound transducer.

Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 100lbs.

May be exposed to chemicals, radiation, and blood/body fluids disease.

The pay rate for this role is $72.00 hourly.

This position is compensated at a fixed rate.

Compensation is established in accordance with the position's approved pay structure.
