Core job summary

The Ultrasound Technologist performs highly skilled and technical operations with an ultrasound machine for diagnostic purposes.

Core job functions 1.

Performs routine and specialty sonographic procedures in cases involving all levels of difficulty.

2.

Operates complex and highly technical equipment including 2-D, 3-D, color, power and spectral doppler modalities for various types of ultrasound examinations.

3.

Ensures the diagnostic quality of all scans through extensive knowledge of ultrasound techniques, disease processes, and technical pitfalls.

4.

Makes preliminary interpretations of the ultrasound examination to bring areas of suspected pathology to the attention of attending physician or fellow.

5.

Checks patient’s chart to confirm ordered procedures, and acquires pertinent clinical information from the patient, hospital chart, electronic medical record system or other available sources.

6.

Assists physicians in the performance of invasive and special procedures.

7.

Greets patients appropriately, escorts patients to exam room, reassures patients, explains procedures prior to starting them, and answers questions.

Adjusts explanations, communication style, and procedures according to the patients’ needs.

Explains to patients and nurses correct preparations for procedures to be performed.

8.

Cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment, assures proper operation of instruments, reports equipment malfunction to appropriate staff, and performs quality assurance tests.

9.

Performs portable bedside examinations.

10.

Trains co-workers, ultrasound students, residents, fellows, and visiting personnel.

11.

Participates in quality improvement activities to insure continuous improvement of services provided.

12.

Follows safety and infection control standards.

13.

Completes all required paperwork, and performs computer functions, such as entering reports, recording completed procedures, logging studies, and ordering procedures.

14.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School diploma or equivalent required

Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required
