Position Summary

The clinical laboratory scientist (Cls) is licensed with the state of california and works under the general technical supervision of the laboratory manager. The cls performs high complexity, moderate complexity, provider performed microscopy, and waived testing as indicated under the 1988 clia amendments and as required by laboratory accrediting agencies. The cls will ensure laboratory standards and procedures are followed and that hospital objectives, including safety of laboratory personnel are met.

Essential duties

Provides accurate and timely pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical aspects of clinical laboratory testing.

Performs qualitative and quantitative tests per procedure, meeting all regulatory requirements and following established procedures within the total laboratory quality program.

Responsible for specimen acceptability, preventive maintenance, temperature control, reagent handling, calibration, quality control, documentation and communication of all tests performed.

Accountability for compliance with laws, regulations, and policies to demonstrate ethical behavior

All other duties or responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Education (or substitute experience) REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other science discipline which meets federal CLIA educational requirements
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license
  • BLS certification within 3 months of hire

Education Preferred

• Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent

Minimum Experience REQUIRED

• Completion of an accredited training program in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science

Experience Preferred

  • 2 years of generalist clinical laboratory experience
  • Previous hospital clinical laboratory experience
