Job Description

  • General Purpose of Job: Responsible for the performance of phlebotomy procedures and non-technical duties in the laboratory, outpatient area and off-site services. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. Performs phlebotomy procedures (veinipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient (from age 0 to > 100 years) requiring this procedure. Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes. Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing. Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions. Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload statistics. Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly workflow. Will act as a receptionist; greet patients, answer phones, files laboratory results, orders and reports, and process reference laboratory reports when not performing phlebotomy procedures. Will act as a lab aid and set up Microbiology cultures and process specimens to promote constant workflow. Readily accepts changes in assignment. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department se requires. Under supervision will help in the training of new employees, MTL students and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties. Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures. Attends all required Safety training programs and can describe his/ her responsibilities related to general safety, department safety, and specific job-related hazards. Complies with established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety procedures. When handling blood and /or body fluids, Universal Precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals. Maintains work area, cleans bench, restocks supplies and notifies manager of low stock. Completes annual required courses on time. Performs DOT and non DOT urine collections when requested following the established guidelines. Performs laboratory QA and checks orders for accuracy (tests, providers, copies) as time allows Seeks additional assignments/projects during periods of lower than normal work volume.
