Our Child Welfare Services (CWS) Referral Program helps families reduce risk, strengthen family functioning, and remain safely together through supportive intervention, resource coordination, and community-based services.

Position Summary

As a Family Enhancement Worker, you'll work directly with children and families to provide supportive intervention services that strengthen family relationships, reduce risk factors, and connect families with the resources they need to succeed. You'll partner with experienced Community Connection Specialists and program staff while gaining valuable hands-on experience in child welfare, family engagement, crisis response, and community-based support services.

This role is ideal for compassionate, dependable individuals who enjoy building relationships, solving problems, and making a lasting impact in the lives of children and families.

Key responsibilities

  • Family support & community engagement
  • Provide weekly in-person visits with assigned families to assess needs and support family goals.
  • Connect families with community resources and collaborate with service providers.
  • Build trusting relationships with children, caregivers, and community partners.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with families and obtain all required consent and release forms.
  • Case support & service coordination
  • Coordinate referrals and connect families with community-based services.
  • Provide transportation to essential appointments, including medical visits, WIC appointments, and other community services.
  • Collaborate with providers and community agencies to ensure families receive appropriate support.
  • Respond to family crises, including after-hours situations when necessary.
  • Parent coaching & family development
  • Provide parent coaching and support healthy parent-child interactions.
  • Assist families with household organization, budgeting, and daily living routines.
  • Encourage family stability through education, guidance, and supportive intervention.
  • Documentation & compliance
  • Maintain accurate documentation and timely case records.
  • Follow IDCFS regulations, confidentiality requirements, and agency policies.
  • Participate in supervision, consultation meetings, required trainings, and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required education & experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Some college coursework preferred.
  • Experience providing services to children, individuals, or families required.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Preferred skills
  • Knowledge of community resources for children, youth, and families.
  • Understanding of child development, trauma, behavioral health, substance use, and domestic violence.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse and multi-stressed families.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Additional requirements
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Reliable personal vehicle with current automobile insurance.
  • Clear driving record.
  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification within three months of hire.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and respond to crisis situations as needed.
