Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director and MT/MLT’s, the Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant is responsible for efficiently and accurately performing blood draws, waived testing, clerical functions, and specimen processing that will include accessioning of specimens submitted to the laboratory as well as specimens collected by other staff/physician offices/clinics. Will provide patient care in accordance with TCRH policies and procedures. Expected to provide a positive image of TCRH and to be able to communicate effectively with patients, peers, physicians and visitors.

The incumbent will carry out duties by adhering to the highest standards of ethical and moral conduct, acts in the best interest of Three Crosses Regional Hospital, and fully supports the mission, vision, and values of Three Crosses Regional Hospital.

Primary Responsibilities

Skilled in laboratory techniques to encompass all age ranges.

Basic clerical skills, phone etiquette. Interdisciplinary collaboration and communication.

Ability to communicate and interact with patients in a manner that makes them feel comfortable with the laboratory assistant’s ability to perform procedure.

Must be able to understand the importance of specimen handling from the delivery to the department, entry into the computer system, to the final report.

Understands the importance of making sure every detail is met for each sample is unique.

There are specimens in the laboratory that are difficult to recollect (i.e. CSF, Bone Marrow, etc.)

Must participate within a team-centered approach toward patient care.

Must observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired regarding personal, financial, medical, or employment of patients, families, and employees of TCRH.

Demonstrate critical thinking, time management and problem-solving skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication (including documentation) skills.

Excellent relationship management with patients, families, and care providers.

Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Follow and enforce safety practices for patients and TCRH.

Attend staff meetings as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience • Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Required: Graduate of a phlebotomy program or 2 years equivalent experience
  • Required: 1-2 years of experience working in a high-volume laboratory in the role of a phlebotomist.
  • Preferred: Hospital setting experience.
  • Required: Meet all Employee Health Requirement
  • Required: BLS certification from AHA
  • Preferred: Certification as Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), Phlebotomy Technician, PBT (ASCP)

Requirements

Requires a high school diploma, completion of a phlebotomy program or equivalent experience, and 1-2 years of experience in a high-volume laboratory. BLS certification from AHA is required, and CPT or PBT certification is preferred.
