About the role

The Sonographer is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound exams and procedures according to physician orders. They must maintain a clean work environment, manage supplies, and collaborate effectively with interdepartmental personnel.

Reporting Relationships: The Sonographer is under the direct supervision of the SCMC Radiology Supervisor

Job Summary

The Sonographer is responsible for performing high quality diagnostic exams/procedures in the Ultrasound department in an efficient manner according to the physician’s order. The Sonographer works effectively with patients and physicians and maintains cooperative relationship with interdepartmental personnel.

Job Duties

  • 1.
  • Complete studies in a timely and efficient manner utilizing downtime to assist others where needed.
  • 2.
  • Organizes workload during high volume to expedite patient care and communicates to other technologists all pending exams and any pertinent information.
  • 3.
  • Assists the physician in performing radiology procedures.
  • 4.
  • Promotes positive relationships at the department level and discusses concerns with the supervisor and presents the department in a positive manner to other employees and staff.
  • 5.
  • Maintains supplies with a minimum inventory and develops new methods of supply utilization.
  • 6.
  • Handles equipment in a safe and appropriate manner within guidelines and policies of WRMC and Imaging department.
  • Maintains clean work area and follows equipment cleaning policies.
  • Assures exterior surfaces of the machines are wiped down after each workday and between patients as appropriate.
  • 7.
  • Willingly assist with procedures in any area of radiology when needed.
  • Check with co-workers during downtime for need of assistance.
  • 8.
  • Follows attendance and tardy policies.
  • 9.
  • Follows WRMC dress code and appearance policy.
  • 10.
  • Participates in required hospital and department in-services and meetings.
  • 11.
  • Follows safety and infection control policies.
  • 12.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications

1.

Education

Must be a graduate of an accredited school of sonography, registered by ARDMS and/or CCI within 6 months of hire. Must have BLS upon hire or 30 days post hire date. 2.

Training and

Experience: General, OB/GYN, Vascular and/or echocardiography experience is desirable. 3.

Job

Knowledge: Experience with Arkansas Department of Health requirements and a clear understanding of hospital operations is required.

Essentials

1.

Must be able to report to work fit for duty and free of any adverse effects of illegal drugs, medical marijuana, prescription medication, and/or alcohol.

2.

Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with other individuals.

3.

Prepares for diagnostic testing by verification of physician order, verification of patient identity, communication with nursing unit when necessary for order clarification and/or patient transport needs.

4.

Thoroughly explains the procedure to the patient and/or family and answers questions regarding the test to alleviate anxiety and prepare patient for test.

5.

Obtains the highest quality studies possible following department protocol for physician interpretation.

6.

Maintains current BLS and ARDMS and/or CCI credentialing licensure status.

Physical Demands

Job responsibilities require a considerable amount of physical work. The individual will be required to assist with lifting and moving patients, pushing of carts, wheelchairs, and other equipment; and lifting or pushing of up to 300 pounds. Workday requires frequent walking, stooping, bending, and moderate degrees of stooping and repetitive hand and wrist movement. Work requires dexterity, hand/eye coordination, and physical ability to push and operate medical equipment. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout the halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies.

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited sonography school and hold ARDMS and/or CCI registration and BLS certification. Experience in General, OB/GYN, Vascular, or echocardiography is desirable.
