Luke's Full-Time Nights 7pm-7am & Every Third Weekend The emergency room RN is responsible for coordinating the care of patients and families utilizing the nursing process.

Summary of duties include: performing a physical and psychological assessment, collection of current symptoms, obtaining a detailed patient history, utilizing nursing knowledge for critical thinking, planning of care, prioritizing of cares, evaluating response to interventions and planning for the needs of the patient and family.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient cares and interventions. Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements. Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology. Records patients’ current vital signs per standard. Works directly with physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intravenous) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse. Provides IV therapy. Cleans and bandages wounds. Provides basic, bedside care. Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients. Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner. Development & Patient Education Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research. Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension. Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education. Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of accredited nursing program required. BSN preferred.

Experience

  • Prefer one (1) year of Emergency Department clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.License(s)/Certification(s): Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa. Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to hire. Must obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 6 months of hire. Trauma Nurse Core Course within one year of hire. Must obtain NIHSS education within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter. Cmpletion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually. Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office – basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

Other

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.

Requirements

Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program with a current Iowa RN license and BLS certification. BSN and one year of Emergency Department experience are preferred, with requirements to obtain ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications within specific timeframes.
