About the role

Provide intensive medical care and bottle-feeding for neonatal kittens in a controlled nursery environment. Maintain strict sanitation protocols and manage medical records to ensure the health and adoptability of fragile patients.

We are a non-profit Animal Shelter serving the North Texas area, and we provide care to dogs and cats until they are adopted into great homes.

Schedule is 4pm-12am , Sunday-Tuesday.

Working at Operation Kindness Humane Society is both fun and rewarding! We offer generous paid time off. As our animals require care each day of the year, weekend and holiday availability is a must. We provide 10 holidays per year that hourly employees who work on the holiday receive time and a half pay!

Reporting relationship: Kitten Nursery Lead and Kitten Manager

Position overview

The Kitten Nursery Technician provides lifesaving neonatal feline medical care. Our new life-saving program for providing kittens care, will be an around-the-clock nursery for neonatal (newborn) kittens. Nursery Technicians provide excellent care for in-house patients to help us save kitten lives and find homes for these kittens when they are of age to be adopted. The nursery is a highly controlled environment in terms of policies, procedures, and processes. Neonatal kitten care is intensive and requires a high degree of attention to detail. This position is specialized care aimed at saving the most fragile lives.

Position responsibilities

· Efficiently and safely bottle-feeding multiple litters of kittens, aged from 1 day to 6 weeks, adhering to established feeding and disease control protocols at all times.

· Follows strict sanitation procedures to prevent disease transmission between litters.

· Carrying out daily cleaning tasks to keep the nursery a sterile, contagion-free environment.

· Training nursery volunteers in feeding and sanitation procedures. Monitoring critical patients while maintaining feeding of nursery population at large.

· Administers medications and provides treatment, including care for critical patients. This may include assisting in physical examinations, administering injections, oral medications, fluid therapy, syringe feeding and enemas.

· Follows medical protocols outlined by Operation Kindness.

· Aids staff in working with the Foster Coordinator to ready kittens from the Kitten Nursery for placement in foster homes.

· Keeps animal records current, including intake paperwork, feeding charts and medical logs.

· Assists in managing inventory of all Kitten Nursery supplies, ensuring all necessary supplies are always stocked and available.

· Assists staff in working with veterinarians to determine proper treatment of sick or injured kittens in the Kitten Nursery.

· Other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities

· Punctuality and reliability are an absolute must.

· Reports suspicion of animal abuse, neglect to Intake and Foster Lead or Manager.

· Always follows Standard Precautions and other safety regulations.

· Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.

· Attends staff meetings.

· Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor.

· Performs other duties as requested by Supervisor or higher-level manager.

Position Requirements

Education Requirements: · Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience Requirements

· 6 months of experience working with cats in a medical or general care capacity, either through employment or volunteer work.

· Experience administering oral medications, monitoring temperature, giving injections, and weighing patients (Strongly Preferred)

· Experience in handling neonatal patients through employment or volunteer work (Preferred)

· Familiarity with concepts of disease transmission and prevention.

Personal Requirements

· Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment.

· Ability to handle cats and kittens and spend extensive periods of time with those animals in close quarters effectively and safely.

· Supports Operation Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization.

· Can work equally well with staff members, clients and volunteers.

· Can relate well to persons with varied backgrounds and beliefs.

· Has a positive attitude; is open to new ideas.

· Physical Effort

Position requires lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighing up to 20 lbs; when animals or materials weigh over 40 lbs, another staff member will assist in the lifting and carrying. Position also requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

· Working conditions

May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and animal diseases.
