Summary

Ensures quality patient care by assisting in the performance of all procedures in the GI department.

Assess, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients in the GI department.

Communicates with the gastroenterologists as needed about patient’s condition, assists with procedures, and assists with maintaining equipment and inventory.

Participates in performance improvement projects, maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and medical center policies and standards.

Position Reports To: Practice Manager

Essential Functions

Ensures quality patient care by following department policies and guidelines.

Maintains IV competency.

Obtains/maintains conscious sedation competency.

Prepares each suite prior to each case by following the daily schedule and procedure requirements.

Ensures safe patient care by placing blood pressure cuff, sensor for pulse oximeter, nasal cannula, surgical cautery pad and cardiac electrodes appropriately.

Assists with positioning of patients.

Assists the MD in the procedure rooms, including but not limited to: biopsies, polypectomy, dilation, charting vitals/patient status and the collection and labeling of specimens.

Delegate’s tasks to the GI tech, recognizing what duties are within their scope of practice.

Ensures optimal outcomes by proper handling of instruments and equipment.

Maintains manufacturer’s recommendations and WVMC policies by proper processes-cleans, disinfects and reprocesses scoped and other instruments, per policy #5510.

Understands the inventory of sterile, non-sterile and disinfected instruments by demonstrating proper handling, function, availability and location.

Prioritizes activities based on knowledge and comprehension of the endoscopy schedule.

Understands operation, function and handling of special equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

Provide assessment by troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment.

If further service is required, process equipment, complete paperwork and calls biomed.

Assists where needed to insure efficient and safe care in the GI patient continuum.

Maintains adequate inventory based on department need.

Demonstrates economic use of equipment and supplies.

Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient’s rights are protected.

Communicate appropriate information to other members of the healthcare team in a timely manner.

Participate in overall GI ASC functions including, but not limited to, scheduling of procedures, training of new staff, maintaining appropriate statistics, assisting with Quality Assurance projects, education to improve self and others, and attending staff meetings and annual education in-services as required.

Comply with attendance requirements.

Channel suggestions, criticism and questions to appropriate individuals.

Accept and act on constructive criticism to improve professional abilities.

Respond appropriately to emergency situations, recognizing the need for assistance and obtaining support from GI personnel and/or physician as needed.

Recognize legal responsibilities and function within limitations as specified by law.

Responsible for complete and thorough performance of assigned tasks.

Demonstrates an awareness of safe conditions and safe acts as related to WVMC employment.

Exhibits cooperation, self-control, and courtesy in relating to coworkers and job-related contacts.

Maintains BLS certification, obtains and maintains ACLS certification within 1 year of employment.

Compliance with universal precautions and the use of personal protective equipment Understands the safety precautions associated with the use of OPA and other chemicals in the healthcare environment.

Other duties as assigned.

Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.

Qualifications

Required

Current Washington State RN license. ACLS training (within a year).

Desired

Previous experience in ambulatory care setting or endoscopy lab desirable.

Requirements
