  • We currently have two Public Health Nurse (PHN) positions available within the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District. Current vacancies are located in:
  • Orange County Health Department
  • Orange/Fauquier County Health Department

Please note that all positions may require travel between district offices and community locations to support operational needs, clinic coverage, communicable disease response activities, outreach events, and other public health priorities. While each position has an assigned primary work location, staff may be reassigned or asked to provide support at other district locations as needed. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District operates five health department locations serving Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties. Job Duties

The Public Health Nurse (PHN) plays a vital role in promoting, protecting, and improving the health of the community through direct clinical services, health education, case management, and disease prevention initiatives. Based in the Orange County Health Department, the PHN serves as a key point of contact for individuals and families, providing nursing assessments, administering immunizations, conducting communicable disease investigations, and supporting maternal and child health programs. This position is essential to ensuring access to critical public health services, building community trust, and strengthening local health outcomes. The PHN collaborates closely with community partners, healthcare providers, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver compassionate, culturally sensitive care that meets the unique needs of our residents.

  • Independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings.
  • Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management.
  • Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments.
  • Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.
  • May supervise support staff

Minimum Qualifications

  • Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
  • Additional Considerations
  • Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
  • BSN preferred
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
