About the role

The Laboratory Technician performs clinical testing by preparing samples, operating analyzers, and reviewing results. They are also responsible for equipment maintenance, quality control documentation, and training new staff.

Description SUMMARY

The Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing by receiving and preparing samples, performing testing using laboratory analyzers, reviewing results, and maintaining accurate records. Interacts with other staff members for training and data analysis. Communicates with the Laboratory Manager, staff, and reference laboratories as needed.

Essential duties

Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and recordkeeping. Performs and documents quality control activities in accordance with laboratory policies. Reviews laboratory results and communicates abnormal, critical, or questionable results as appropriate. Performs equipment maintenance and troubleshooting as needed. Follows established safety standards and procedures and complies with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Adheres to HIPAA regulations and maintains the confidentiality of protected health information. Ensures proper inventory management of laboratory supplies. Trains new hires to ensure laboratory procedures are followed. Reports to work on time for all scheduled shifts and completes the entire scheduled shift. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related laboratory science from an accredited institution required. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science from an accredited institution preferred. Ability to think critically and analyze lab data based on a combination of experience and course study. Ability to exercise initiative and problem solving. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with clinical staff.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle, or feel objects, use tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hours/Travel

  • May travel between locations occasionally as requested.
  • Typical work hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 8 AM – 5 PM (May vary). May include other daily hours, weekends and/or holidays. May need to work occasional overtime as required.
