The assistant supports specialty laboratory departments by managing inbound specimens, registering patients in the LIS, and performing phlebotomy. They also maintain lab inventory and assist medical technologists and providers during clinical procedures.

Job Description: Essential

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responsible for assisting the Central Laboratory specialty departments (blood bank, flow cytometry and molecular) on duties as needed. 2. Responsible for managing inbound specimens from the clinic sites, thoroughly sorting the coolers, checking manifests, and releasing specimens into the Central Laboratory. 3. Responsible for registering external patients directly into the laboratory information system and keeping the laboratory information system uniform, organized and up to date. 4. Responsible for answering the lab phone and Daily Lab Safety Communication chat and assisting callers with their questions and requests. 5. Responsible for assisting the medical technologists to find and account for specimens and pending logs. 6. Responsible for assisting the medical technologists to unpack inventory shipments. 7. Responsible for assisting the providers during bone marrow biopsies. 8. Responsible for providing phlebotomy duties as needed. 9. Responsible for maintaining lab supply inventory and complete order forms for needed supplies. 10. Responsible for completing tasks as laboratory leadership deems appropriate.

Able to perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to specimen ordering, collecting, processing and packaging for send out testing. Able to interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHC staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients and family members demonstrating sensitivity in regard to cultural diversity, age specific needs, confidentiality and all abilities. Functions as a team member by expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.

Monday-Friday Day shift No weekends, No holidays

Education:

  • Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience:
  • Two years related work experience including phlebotomy
  • Other: Exceptional people skills in the medical field. Ability to maintain composure during extremely busy times. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently at a fast pace with minimal supervision. Able to maintain confidentiality. 95% of time spent standing / walking. High attention to detail needed.
