Job Duties

  • The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental services support individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life.
  • DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation.
  • State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services.
  • DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians.
  • This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility, located in Danville, VA.

This position will provide social work interventions for inpatient psychiatric patients, including psychosocial assessments, provision of psychosocial services and discharge planning to ensure that appropriate community supports for stable community living and recovery are available and accessible.

Minimum Qualifications

MSW from an accredited graduate school of social work. Case work/group work experience. If licensed, must maintain LCSW license and remain in good standing throughout employment.

This position will require

Advanced knowledge of social work interventions, particularly casework and group work, is essential. Advanced knowledge of mental illnesses, substance abuse/addiction and skills related to psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models of intervention. Knowledgeable of community systems of care and services and the skills to access them. Ability to serve as a member of interdisciplinary teams and/or committees to accomplish objectives. Effective communication skills with ability to interact with patients, family members, and community-based organizations as well as with coworkers.

Additional Considerations

Experience as a Social Worker in a psychiatric healthcare facility, acute care, long-term or correctional setting. Veterans and people with National Service.

Requirements
