Whether caring for patients receiving hospice services or partnering with patients earlier in the course of advanced illness through our growing palliative care consult services, our physicians play a vital role in delivering expert, compassionate care.

This is far more than a traditional hospice physician position. It is an opportunity to practice the full spectrum of Hospice and Palliative Medicine alongside an experienced interdisciplinary team serving patients across 18 counties in Southwestern Virginia and Northwestern North Carolina.

Position responsibilities

Responsibilities

include a blend of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, including:

Evaluate and manage patients receiving hospice and palliative care services in homes, facilities, inpatient settings, and clinics as appropriate.

Provide expert assessment and management of complex symptoms.

Lead goals-of-care conversations and advance care planning discussions.

Collaborate with referring physicians and specialists to ensure seamless continuity of care.

Certify hospice eligibility and complete Medicare-required recertifications and Face-to-Face encounters.

Serve as attending physician for hospice patients who elect Mountain Valley physician services.

Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, providing clinical leadership and consultation.

Mentor and collaborate with Advanced Practice Providers and other clinicians.

Participate along with the provider team in night and weekend coverage

We are seeking a physician who

Has a genuine passion for Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Values interdisciplinary collaboration.

Demonstrates excellent communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Enjoys caring for medically complex patients with compassion and clinical excellence.

Appreciates the privilege of walking alongside patients and families through serious illness.

Experience in Hospice and Palliative Medicine is strongly preferred. Physicians with significant experience caring for patients with advanced illness—including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Oncology, Pulmonary/Critical Care, or other applicable specialties—who have a sincere interest in transitioning into Hospice and Palliative Medicine are encouraged to apply.

Hospice and Palliative Medicine board certification or eligibility is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO
  • Eligible for medical licensure in both Virginia and North Carolina (or ability to obtain licensure)
  • DEA registration in both Virginia and North Carolina (or ability to obtain)
  • Valid driver's license with ability to travel throughout Mountain Valley Hospice's 18-county service area in Southwestern Virginia and Northwestern North Carolina

Requirements
