About the role

The Specimen Management Tech is responsible for accurate patient registration, data entry of testing orders, and the sorting and triaging of laboratory samples. They ensure specimens are correctly labeled and prepared for testing or transfer to reference labs.

  • Sundays every 6 - 8 weeks from 2:00p - 8:00p for coverage SUMMARY The Specimen Management Tech assures accurate patient registration, data entry of testing orders and billing information of all lab specimens into the hospital, pathology and/or lab computer system/s, and prepares samples for testing, sorts and triages samples appropriately.

Responsibilities

Performs data entry and labeling of laboratory samples accurately and timely. Prepares laboratory samples accurately and timely for laboratory testing. May be asked to operate imaging system as appropriate and be able to retrieve requisitions as requested or may maintain a manual filing system for outpatient/inpatient requisitions. Maintains knowledge and competency of HIS and LIS computer systems and has knowledge of many areas of the department. Has a working knowledge of common operating systems and navigates through them appropriately. May perform limited training as requested. Communicates effectively with floors and physicians regarding laboratory testing, results, sample requirements and issues with improper labeling of specimens. May transport specimens to department. May prepare specimens and paperwork accurately for transfer and testing done in other departments or reference labs. For Medical Technology Student Intern only: Performance of simple laboratory procedures (none requiring interpretation or resulting) under the direction of licensed staff. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess skills and the ability to understand written instruction and receive and transmit information correctly Data entry/computer skills For Medical Technology Student Intern only: Enrollment in a Program of Medical Technology

Preferred Qualifications

Medical terminology and understanding of billing issues preferred EDUCATION: LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting. For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements. Any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee and/or employee’s physician or delegate will be considered for accommodations. PAY RANGE: $18.75 - $20.00 CITY: Rochester POSTAL CODE: 14624 The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts. Rochester Regional Health is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Requirements

Candidates must have strong data entry and computer skills and the ability to follow written instructions. Enrollment in a Medical Technology program is required specifically for student interns.
