Summary/Objective: The Certified Phlebotomist will perform venipuncture, skin punctures, and all other ancillary testing competently and expediently. This position requires thorough knowledge of test requirements & assists in the clinical laboratory as needed.
Essential
Functions: Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions Perform blood draws competently & expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible. Record phlebotomy requisitions. Identify the patient by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s verbal information before venipuncture is performed. Label & records all test tubes and complete log procedures as outlined in the lab procedure manual. Demonstrate knowledge of color top tubes to use, as well as the proper volume of blood needed, and test requirements. Follow universal precautions always. Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule and recording results in the quality-control log. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique and following department procedures. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the ordering provider or nurse; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders. Dispose of sharps & any containments properly using. Prioritizes STAT, scheduled, and walk in appointments accordingly. Enhances phlebotomy department by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests. Centrifuge blood samples as required by test(s). Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients & equipment. Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and local regulations. Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Complete assignments efficiently & in a timely manner. Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner. Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.

Duties/Responsibilities: Clean, stock, and/or order supplies for all areas in the laboratory, as requested by your supervisor. Other duties as assigned by the Regional Manager, Site Manager, or Provider. Promote the mission, vision, and values of Galen Medical Group. Maintain confidentiality of all patients, medical, financial, and legal information. Report to work on time and as scheduled. Represent the organization in a positive & professional manner. Comply with all organization policies and standards regarding ethical business practices. Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Attend regular staff meetings and in-services as directed by your manager. Consistently demonstrate the value of the team concept. Understands and abides by OSHA, HIPAA & CLIA standards.

Qualifications
Education: High School Graduate or equivalent is required.
Must be a certified phlebotomist from a nationally accredited institution. Must be BLS trained and certified at all times. Excellent customer service skills. Exceptional skills of independence, organization, verbal and written communication, problem-solving, professional interaction, and human relation skills, as well as analytical skills and problem-solving ability. Must be PC literate with strong computer navigational skills, as well as extensive knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
