This role is focused on performing specialized molecular diagnostic testing on biological specimens by extracting, amplifying, and analyzing nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) to assist in disease diagnosis, clinical research, or patient care. The technician ensures all laboratory procedures meet regulatory standards while maintaining equipment and strict quality control

Responsibilities

Sample Preparation

Receive, log, sort, and process biological specimens (such as blood, tissue, or urine) using extraction techniques.

Molecular

Testing: Perform assays like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), RT-qPCR, and DNA/RNA sequencing.

Quality

Control: Run standards and controls, calibrate equipment, and document quality assurance activities to meet CLIA or CAP standards.

Data

Management: Analyze test results and enter data accurately into Laboratory Information Management Systems.

Equipment

Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and cleaning of complex lab instruments.

Safety

Compliance: Adhere to strict biosafety and chemical safety protocols, including wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

Job Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience Associate's or bachelor’s degree or a science-related degree. Must have at least 1 year of general laboratory experience. AMT or ASCP certification required. Vitros Chemistry analyzer experience preferred

Skills/Abilities Education

Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related life science.

Certifications

Preferred credentials include Technologist in Molecular Biology (MB), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or equivalent certifications from ASCP, AAB, or AMT.

Core

Skills: Proficiency in PCR, nucleic acid extraction, strong analytical problem-solving, and close attention to detail

Attention to detail: Essential for accurate sample tracking, quality control, and preventing contamination.

Problem-solving: Ability to identify and fix issues when test results or equipment deviate from standards.

Communication: Clear reporting of data to supervisors, researchers, or healthcare providers

Experience & Skills

Core techniques

Proficiency in PCR, RT-qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and sample preparation.

Equipment operation: Ability to run, calibrate, and troubleshoot automated analyzers and laboratory instruments.

Systems &

Compliance: Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and strict adherence to CLIA, COLA, or OSHA safety protocols

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Ability to see with corrective lenses and hear with or without assistance May be exposed to infectious or contagious diseases Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary

Physical Demands

Frequent standing and walking within the laboratory environment Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds if needed Manual dexterity for handling specimens and operating lab equipment

Requirements

Requires an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a science-related field and at least one year of general laboratory experience. AMT or ASCP certification is required, with experience using Vitros Chemistry analyzers preferred.
