About the role

The Medical Assistant provides clinical support in General Medicine, including performing vital signs, EKGs, and point-of-care testing. They are also responsible for patient flow, coordinating referrals, and managing clinical communications via APeX and MyChart.

Employment Duration: 3 months (w/ potential for extension)

Under the supervision of the Unit Manager and the Administrative Nurse, and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of care to patients at the Department of General Medicine at all locations. Responsibilities include a variety of personal care and nursing procedures, including vital signs, health maintenance review, and EKGs. The Medical Assistant performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of primary care services and adheres to the Medical Center’s Telephone and House Standards.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine clinical functions, including:

Vital signs

Pain screening

Height and weight measurement

Documentation of chief complaint

Perform health maintenance screenings according to practice guidelines.

Assist with medication reconciliation by helping patients update medication lists.

Document interpreter use and coordinate interpreter services for appointments.

Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.

Assist with complex medical procedures after completing required competencies.

Serve as a chaperone for medical providers as needed.

Cover APeX in-baskets and phone messages during team member absences.

Transport patients as directed.

Monitor patient flow throughout the clinic.

Obtain specimens and perform simple point-of-care testing, including quality assurance/quality control on CLIA-waived tests.

Maintain required logs, including temperature and disaster cabinet logs.

Perform EKGs and transmit reports as required.

Assist providers with patient communications.

Complete referrals as ordered by providers.

Obtain medication authorizations from insurers.

Perform clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.

Follow Medical Center and Ambulatory Services policies related to infection control, safety, and clinical and administrative practice.

Complete annual competency testing.

Ensure medication cabinets remain locked.

Participate in the One Touch Team (OTT), answering and managing incoming patient calls for clinical advice and following established call management workflows.

Demonstrate professional, courteous communication with patients, families, providers, and colleagues.

Communicate patient concerns and observations with the care team.

Use APeX, MyChart, email, and other required systems for patient care.

Assist patients with concerns using conflict management skills.

Coordinate care and help resolve patient care issues.

Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

Demonstrate competency using Cisco phone systems and automatic call distribution processes.

Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked exam rooms, laboratories, and nursing stations.

Order and maintain supplies and perform maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Follow infection control, cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures.

Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.

May perform

APeX functions including:

Opening and closing order-only encounters

Searching and modifying orders

Pending orders for provider signature

Creating referrals

Managing CRM and telephone encounters

Sending MyChart communications

Creating SmartPhrase templates

Updating appointment status

Perform other patient care duties as required.

Travel to UCSF Medical Center locations as needed.

Requirements

Candidates must have at least six months of Medical Assistant experience, computer proficiency, and a current AHA CPR certification. A Medical Assistant program certification and fluency in Cantonese are preferred.
