About the role

The staff RN provides ongoing medical monitoring, assessment, and counseling for non-psychiatric conditions while coordinating care across various McLean services. They also provide containment and support within a milieu-based treatment setting and lead patient groups.

Job Summary The staff RN works closely with the clinical team to provide ongoing medical monitoring, assessment, and counseling for non-psychiatric medical conditions.

The RN will provide brief therapy and psychoeducation around treatment, diagnosis, and medications.

Duties include coordinating medical care with other McLean services and external clinics and hospitals.

Additionally, the RN will provide containment and support for the community given that this is a milieu-based treatment committed to implementing specific evidence-based principles of interpersonal management.

They will also be responsible for MAP certification training and testing for counselors and for providing nursing care within the standards of the department, hospital and regulatory agencies.

Essential Functions

Accurately assesses patients’ needs. Utilizes multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status. Utilizes Recovery Oriented Framework to identify patient strengths. Performs point of care testing. Communicate findings effectively to members of the healthcare team. Documentation reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions. Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis; utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate a crisis situation. Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients. Modifies and individualizes Nursing Plan of Care and protocols. Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs. Partners with patients/families to support recovery goals. Provides and implements nursing care interventions. Establishes a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients. Demonstrates safe, accurate and timely medication administration using BMV scanning. Reviews physician orders in a timely manner. Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery-oriented goals. Participates in leading patient groups. Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions. Documentation on the Nursing Plan of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions. Accurately communicate patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports. Utilizes evidence-based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions. Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care. Provides direction and supervision of MHSs. Delegate care interventions. Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies. Promotes/provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency event. Anticipates acute milieu problems and delegates staff appropriately. Participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers. Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others. Provides health teaching related to patient needs and recovery goals. Documents teaching in the patient’s record. Informs treatment team of patients and significant others’ learning needs. Maintains a commitment to professional growth and competency. Completes mandatory in-service requirements. Maintains competency for treating patient population. Seeks constructive feedback regarding work performance from peers and professional colleagues. Identifies strengths and areas for professional/practice development with supervisor. Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality. Communicate positively, supportively, and with courtesy to the patients and staff. Presents self in a positive and professional manner. Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit. Demonstrates effective time management. Demonstrates economical management of services and supplies. Notifies shift coordinator/charge nurse of availability for additional assignments.

Qualifications: Education Other Certificate/Diploma Nursing required or Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, ability to utilize the nursing process and to work collaboratively.
  • Must complete and pass Epic training within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful passing (80% or higher) of Epic training modules(s) is a minimum requirement of the job.

Additional Job Details (if applicable) The Resource Team at McLean provides flexible, responsive care by supporting all 10 inpatient units and the Clinical Evaluation Center based on real-time staffing needs. Team members ensure continuity of care across diverse clinical settings, adapting quickly to different patient populations and unit protocols.
