The Operating Room Assistant is responsible for providing medical assistance and ensuring patient safety within the operating room. They also facilitate patient transfers and maintain a supportive environment for patients and their families.

Job Summary Summary Responsible for ensuring excellent patient care, maintaining safety standards, and providing medical assistance in the operating room.

Essential Functions

Promotes a philosophy of patient/family-focused care through cordial greetings and interactions with patients, families, and hospital personnel.

Provides hospital/unit orientation information for guests, patients, and families.

Demonstrates an awareness of hospital systems and procedures, locations of all departments, procedure areas, and other patient services.

Refers patients, families, and others to appropriate resources.

Independently transports and assists in the transfer of patients.

Properly identifies patients utilizing two approved identifiers.

Ensures safety and support measures during patient transfers (e.g., bedrails raised, patient covered with a blanket and kept warm).

Is aware of special precautions when transferring patients requiring precautions.

Qualifications: Education High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Licenses and Credentials

Experience Medical Office/Hospital/Managed Care Experience 0-1 year required and Operating Room Experience 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies and ordering supplies.
  • Must be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with other health care members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the surgical team.
  • Must constantly be alert and attentive to progress of O.R. schedule to meet tight deadlines.
