Position Details

  • LOCATION: Pacific Cancer Care – 5 Harris Ct., Suite 201, Monterey, CA 93940 SCHEDULE: Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 8-Hour Shifts (in person preferred; remote/hybrid considered) COMPENSATION RANGE: $55.00 - $60.00 per hour commensurate with experience TALENT INVESTMENT BENEFITS include but are not limited to:

Opportunity overview

Pacific Cancer Care (PCC) is seeking an organized and compassionate Triage Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Monterey team. This role is critical in managing chemotherapy side effects and oncological emergencies through telephone and in-person triage assessments. The Triage RN determines optimal patient management (ER, clinic, homecare), coordinates follow-up care, and provides patient education in accordance with established protocols. The ideal candidate is patient-focused, skilled in oncology nursing, and able to communicate effectively with patients, providers, and team members across all communications mediums.

Essential role & responsibilities

  • Manage chemotherapy side effects and oncological emergencies via telephone triage and in-person assessment.
  • Determine appropriate care setting (ER, clinic, homecare) and coordinate follow-up care.
  • Prescribe and communicate treatment plans and patient teaching per established protocols.
  • Triages phone calls according to acuity; provides or obtains sound nursing advice/medical response same day (90% of the time).
  • Notify MD of urgent/critical findings for response within 30 minutes; identify patients requiring ER transfer.
  • Respond to patient requests for refill prescriptions, lab or radiology results promptly; clarify prescriptions with outside pharmacies as needed.
  • Coordinate referrals to external providers (home health, DME, etc.) and ensure services are established.
  • Demonstrate understanding of commonly used oral chemotherapy and targeted agents, including side effect management.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding medications, toxicities, and management strategies.
  • Ensure follow-up calls for patients on oral agents to assess compliance and toxicity.
  • Submit prescriptions to specialty pharmacies and obtain prior authorizations as required.
  • Complete referral paperwork thoroughly, including MD signatures.
  • Navigate ONCO EMR to obtain information, add tests, activities, and medications accurately.
  • Utilize community and online resources for patient and family support.
  • Participate in INR monitoring and dosing; review labs and adjust Coumadin per guidelines and/or MD recommendation.
  • Complete Death Certificate worksheets and sympathy cards with appropriate signatures.

Desired education, credentials & qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in nursing; BSN preferred; MSN a plus
  • Current California RN license
  • BLS certification
  • ONS Oncology Symptom Management (complete within 6months of hire)
  • ONS/ONCC® Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate; preferre

Experience & competencies

  • 1 year minimum of oncology, patient triage and infusion experience, 2-3 years’ experience strongly preferred
  • Strong patient education, assessment, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet performance standards
  • Proficiency in EMR systems (OncoEMR preferred)
  • Ability to work well independently and with others

Physical factors

The physical abilities required of the person in this position may include the following:

Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed and computer documents throughout the shift

Speech and hearing sufficient to receive and communicate detailed information clearly by phone and in person with diverse audiences

Motor skills sufficient to reach, lift, bend, and handle, use or operate computer terminal, fax machine, copier, telephone, files, and other materials

Physical ability to sit, stand or otherwise remain stationary post for long periods of time

Physical ability to walk up and down stairs multiple times throughout the day.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a current California RN license and BLS certification, with at least an associate degree in nursing. A minimum of one year of oncology, patient triage, and infusion experience is required, with two to three years strongly preferred.
