Primary Function

The MRI Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols, and regulatory standards. Technologists ensure patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality while maintaining compliance with MRI safety guidelines, ACR standards, and facility policies.

Responsibilities

  • 1.
  • Perform MRI examinations according to established protocols and physician orders 2.
  • Position patients accurately and select appropriate imaging parameters 3.
  • Operate MRI equipment and related imaging software safely and efficiently 4.
  • Recognize and troubleshoot image quality issues and equipment malfunctions 5.
  • Administer contrast agents in accordance with facility policy and scope of practice 6.
  • Verify patient identity and exam orders prior to imaging 7.
  • Screen patients for MRI safety, including implants, devices, and contraindications 8.
  • Educate patients regarding procedures and provide reassurance throughout the exam 9.
  • Monitor patients during scans for signs of distress or adverse reactions 10.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA 11.
  • Enforce MRI safety protocols and zone restrictions 12.
  • Perform and document MRI safety screening for patients, visitors, and staff 13.
  • Ensure proper use of MRI-safe and MRI-conditional equipment 14.
  • Respond appropriately to MRI emergencies per facility policy 15.
  • Maintain compliance with ACR, Joint Commission, and regulatory standards 16.
  • Accurately document patient history, screening, and exam details 17.
  • Maintain proper exam records in PACS/RIS and electronic medical records 18.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities 19.
  • Participate in accreditation and audit processes as required 20.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and basic troubleshooting 21.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe MRI suite 22.
  • Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or incidents promptly 23.
  • Foster a professional, respectful, and confidential environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • 24.
  • Promote open communication, trust, and collaboration within the department.
  • 25.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.

Qualifications

1. Graduate of an accredited MRI program.

  • 2.
  • State licensure (if required).
  • 3.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • 4.
  • Strong knowledge of MRI safety principles, imaging equipment, and MRI contrast handling.
  • 5.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
  • 6.
  • ARRT certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) required or obtained within a specified timeframe

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods 2. Ability to lift, push, or transfer patients with or without assistance 3. Manual dexterity is sufficient to operate equipment and computer systems

Work Environment

1. MRI suite with exposure to strong magnetic fields 2. Fast-paced clinical environment with direct patient contact

3. May be required to help in the main office with clerical duties when not with patients.
