The Lab Specimen Processor is responsible for receiving, logging, and preparing biological specimens for laboratory analysis while maintaining strict safety and quality control standards. They must accurately document all activities in laboratory information systems and ensure proper storage and organization of specimens.

Job Summary The Lab Specimen Processor plays a crucial role in supporting laboratory operations by ensuring biological specimens are accurately received, processed, and prepared for testing and analysis.

This position is responsible for maintaining specimen integrity through proper handling, labeling, storage, and documentation while following established laboratory procedures and safety standards.

The Lab Specimen Processor works closely with laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and other team members to ensure timely and efficient workflow.

Attention to detail, organizational skills, and adherence to quality standards are essential to success in this role.

Ultimately, this position contributes to accurate diagnostic results and quality patient care by providing reliable specimen processing services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to read, write, and understand verbal and written communication.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and specimen handling procedures.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Laboratory Assistant.
  • Previous experience in a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS/LIMS).
  • Knowledge of biosafety regulations and infection prevention practices.
  • Experience handling and processing a variety of clinical specimens.
  • Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Receive, verify, and log incoming specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare specimens for testing through centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, and other processing activities.
  • Maintain specimen storage areas and ensure proper handling and environmental conditions.
  • Accurately document specimen information and processing activities in laboratory information systems.
  • Follow laboratory safety, infection prevention, and quality assurance standards at all times.
  • Communicate specimen discrepancies, labeling issues, or concerns to appropriate laboratory personnel.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to support efficient workflow and timely test processing.
  • Ensure specimen integrity is maintained throughout the collection, transport, processing, and storage process.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies and notify appropriate personnel of inventory needs.
  • Assist with maintaining laboratory cleanliness and organization in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and departmental objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to handle biological specimens and laboratory materials using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemical and biological materials.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and possess basic knowledge of laboratory safety and specimen handling. Preferred qualifications include certification as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Laboratory Assistant and experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
