About the role

The Dietitian provides professional nutrition assessment, consultation, and dietary planning for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They are responsible for monitoring nutritional needs, developing therapeutic menus, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and Medicaid standards.

Job summary

The Contract Dietitian provides professional nutrition assessment, consultation, education, and dietary planning services for individuals receiving Community Living Services through Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana (VOASELA). The Dietitian ensures compliance with physician orders, Medicaid and regulatory requirements, and agency policies while promoting optimal nutritional health and wellness for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This position is responsible for conducting annual nutritional assessments, completing quarterly medical record reviews for all consumers, monitoring individuals with specialized nutritional needs, providing recommendations to the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), developing therapeutic menus, and educating staff regarding nutritional care. Services may be provided onsite or through approved telehealth methods when appropriate.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct annual face-to-face nutrition assessments for all assigned consumers.
  • Complete face-to-face nutritional assessments for all newly admitted consumers.
  • Review medical records for all consumers at least once every quarter.
  • Perform monthly or 30-day nutrition record reviews for consumers requiring enhanced nutritional monitoring.
  • Develop individualized nutritional recommendations based on physician orders, diagnoses, laboratory findings, and clinical needs.
  • Develop specialized menus and nutritional interventions for consumers requiring therapeutic diets.
  • Provide written documentation, nutrition assessments, progress notes, and recommendations in the consumer's medical record.
  • Participate in Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings as requested.
  • Provide consultation to physicians, nursing staff, Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professionals (QIDPs), Home Managers, and Direct Support Professionals regarding nutritional concerns.
  • Conduct nutrition-related in-service training for agency staff.
  • Assist with menu planning and nutritional analysis for residential homes.
  • Conduct household nutrition and food service inspections when requested.
  • Monitor compliance with Title XIX, Medicaid Waiver requirements, state licensing standards, accreditation standards, and agency policies.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to improve consumer health outcomes.
  • Maintain all required professional licensure and malpractice insurance throughout the duration of the contract.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

This position requires knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to

  • Current registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist License (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of Medicaid Waiver regulations, Title XIX, and state licensing standards.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to analyze clinical information and develop evidence-based nutritional interventions.

Requirements

This position requires the candidate to have the following

  • Current Louisiana Dietitian License.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential.
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Current tuberculosis screening as required by agency policy
  • Ability to complete agency orientation and required compliance training
